Why it's important to mentor

Forbes has a great article with the top four reasons to mentor. Our favourite is "You are networking with the next generation of leaders."

This year, one of the goals of the 2018 MCA Conference is to enhance your network and what a better way to enhance your network than by participating in "Mentor Golf." Discounts apply when you bring a mentor or mentee. Not coming to the conference? That's ok, you can still come for the golf tournament! Register now.

Membership survey

MCA Canada has created a survey to better understand the membership and what segments of the industry you as contractors focus on. It is limited to six questions and only requires a check box in most instances so the survey can be completed in under a minute.

The information will only be used for association purposes and will not be given to anyone other than the national, provincial and zone MCA's and/or members.
Education and Training
March review

We had a busy month for education beginning with construction estimating. The students found the instructor knowledgeable and gave great information on bid procedures, bid submission and the overview of construction law.

Stay tuned for next spring when MCA hosts an estimating conference - a unique conference focusing not on how to estimate but rather project procurement and strategies. Sessions covered will include deal breakers, project risk and go/no-go strategies, putting together a proposal and what a general contractor looks for in its selection process - to name a few.

Health and safety management system

A health and safety management system is a process put in place by an employer to minimize the risk of injury and illness. An effective health and safety management system must have the following eight components in place:
  1. Identification and analysis of health and safety hazards at the work site.
  2. Control measures to eliminate or reduce the risks to workers from hazards.
  3. Clearly demonstrated and management commitment, and written company policy.
  4. Worker competency and training.
  5. Inspection program.
  6. Emergency response planning.
  7. Incident reporting and investigation.
  8. Management system administration.

At our annual conference and AGM we have special guest speakers that will talk about the importance of safety management systems, what is preventable and understanding hazards. Join us to find out the changes to OHS Act and how to protect your company!
