Changing Direction

A Message from Us

Don Weberg

Having presented countless garages in GSM, I thought I had a pretty fair idea for how I’d want my garage set up. But the fact is, there are so many directions to go in that I’m a bit lost in the whirlpool of options. We’re still in the cleanup phase, or cleanout phase I guess, with moving boxes to and fro since we moved here, so that helps. Nothing like a legitimate delay to help one find purpose, focus, and reason. The interesting part to me though is the change in direction. As a collector’s collector, I have tons of ‘stuff’ and was looking forward to arranging it, using it, displaying it – reliving it. But as time wears on, and more ‘stuff’ reveals itself to me, I am more inclined to clear the decks and create a space of less.  Fewer things on the walls, fewer things in general. It’s weird. I blame Pete Aylett of carart.us who was recently forced into repurposing his 2-car garage, thanks to a massive water intrusion. His garage went from basic, everyday garage to a gallerage, or a gallery-garage, with fresh walls, fresh lighting, fresh flooring, and just the right amount of art hanging on the wall. The look is truly refreshing and I intend to do a nice profile on it soon so you can all see what I’m talking about. But I think that inspired me to go the other way, to change direction and try something a little out of the ordinary, at least for me. Stay tuned.

ESE Carbon E2

Drastic Price Reduction on Single-Piece Carbon Fiber Wheels

ESE Carbon, makers of carbon fiber wheels, recently announced new, lower pricing on their popular E2 line of wheels. Available in a multitude of sizes, the company has been crafting single-piece, carbon wheels in the United States for roughly 10 years and is excited about their new pricing – a set of four wheels is now $1,125 per wheel or $4,500 for a set. To compare, often times a single carbon fiber wheel can cost around $5,000.

The case for carbon fiber wheels is solid and growing in popularity. What began on the race courses (Michelin and Citroen both developed the first carbon fiber wheels back in the 1970s) has evolved into the must-have accessory for modern motoring.  ESE wheels weigh roughly 17 pounds, which generally translates to less than half the weight of most factory metal wheels. With weight like this, vehicles exhibit quicker acceleration, shorter braking distances, higher MPG and extended e-range among other benefits. Learn more here.

Our Very Own Rodney Kemerer

Tales from the Garage

You saw it here first – in the pages of Garage Style Magazine, Rodney Kemerer’s Tales from the Garage column riveted readers with stories aplenty revolving around cars, but each is something anyone can relate to. Like a sit com on TV, Tales from the Garage took us on a journey every issue from meeting the wife and Rolls-Royce of famed Hollywood director John Frankenheimer and the story of how they acquired the Rolls while filming in Europe to the tale of Jim’s Cars, a story about a massive die cast collection discovered in a garage. The stories are a collection from Rodney’s own experiences and from others who’ve shared their tales with Rodney, making for a great read. Don’t just take our word for it, see what Robb Report had to say about it here or listen to what Rodney has to say about it here. A perfect Christmas gift for anyone who loves short stories, snap up a few on Amazon here.

Ivanov Artwork

My name is Stefan Ivanov. I was born in January of 1987 and am from small and quiet town in the center of Bulgaria called Dryanovo. For 17 years I have been doing something never done before, creating the whole history of the Laurin & Klement (Skoda since 1925) Auto Company by illustrating it. The story behind this is as unusual as my hobby.

In November of 2005, I crashed with motorcycle. I spent two weeks in a coma with two skull fractures, back and neck injuries, partial loss of memory, and many more secondary injuries. After that I spent most of my time in bed at home, thinking about life and how for a moment everything goes upside down. Before the crash I was a two time national champion in athletics, athlete of the year for 2001 in my town, so I never quit, always fighting my way out.

New Garage for a Retired Concours Boss

Bill Warner

Bill Warner needs no introduction. The founder of the Amelia Island Concours, Bill’s name is legend in the community, not only for his work with the Concours, but his work with various books and magazines through the years. You can hear more about his story, in his own words, on the Gran Touring Motorsports Break-Fix podcast here.

Having sold the Concours to Hagerty, and he’s quick to remind that to sell a nonprofit, one can’t just sell it – it has to go through certain formalities as the founder/owner can’t make any money. Or something to that effect. Regardless, the time was right to pass the torch on to a new handler, and Hagerty wanted the opportunity to sustain what he began. With all this new-found time on his hands, Bill decided it was time to sort out his own garage.
