DEMOPOLIS, Ala., Aug. 19, 2025 — Steve Boggan, a leader in the medical technology and device industry for more than three decades, has become the newest member of the board of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences (ASHS) Foundation. The board is revving into expansion mode as a countdown begins for ASHS’s launch a year from now.
“My life’s work has been about advancing healthcare through science and innovation,” said Boggan. “ASHS is designed to provide unique training for high school students to prepare them for in-demand careers and service to communities throughout Alabama. This education requires hands-on learning using the latest technology, and I’m excited to build support for ASHS and partnerships with other tech leaders.”
Boggan began his career in research and development in the orthopedic implant industry in 1989 with Dow Corning Wright (now part of Stryker Corporation). In 1995, he joined BioHorizons, a Birmingham-based medical device startup, and in 2000 became its president and CEO.
Under his leadership, BioHorizons grew into the fourth-largest dental implant company in the world. BioHorizons was fully acquired by Henry Schein, Inc., a Fortune 500 company. Boggan serves on the Executive Management Committee and is CEO Americas for the surgical division of Henry Schein.
A 1986 graduate of Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Engineering, the new Foundation board member also holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an MBA from the University of Memphis.
Recognized as one of the industry’s most influential executives by Medical Device & Diagnostic Industry magazine, Boggan is known for his strategic vision, commitment to quality and passion for education and workforce development in the health sciences.
“Steve has been an avid supporter of education, youth programming, and healthcare in Alabama and nationally,” said J. Scott Huffman, president and CEO of the ASHS Foundation. “He has made a sizable impact on shaping the lives of Alabamians and we are excited to have him join the foundation board. His success in building global healthcare companies and his strong ties to Alabama’s biomedical community will be help set apart ASHS as a leader in opportunities for students pursuing careers in medical fields and transforming healthcare in Alabama.”
ASHS will welcome its first freshman class of up to 100 students at its own mini-campus on the grounds of the University of West Alabama in Livingston in August 2026.
Final decisions are being made on healthcare career pathways and curricula that will enable recruitment of faculty, staff and students, and groundbreaking is planned for this fall on the $62 million, 10-acre residential campus adjacent to Whitfield Regional Hospital in Demopolis that will open in fall of 2027.
