MedChi Encourages Safe Medication Disposal Ahead of 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

On Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, will join the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in supporting National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, a nationwide initiative to safely dispose of unneeded medications and help prevent prescription drug misuse and overdose.

As part of this important public health effort, the DEA and its national, state, and local partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription medications at nearly 4,200 locations across the country —free of charge and anonymously. Maryland residents are encouraged to participate by locating a nearby collection site using their ZIP code at takebackday.dea.gov.

“For sixteen years, the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day has helped Americans safely dispose of unneeded medications, those that are old, unwanted, or expired, to prevent drug misuse and abuse,” Eric Wargotz, MD, FCAP, President of MedChi said. “During the most recent Take Back Day on October 25, 2025, more than 570,000 pounds (286 tons) of medications were collected.”

In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 20.4 million pounds (10,200 tons) of medications from circulation since its inception.

Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, or illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container, with caps tightly secured to prevent leakage.

This event is free, anonymous, and open to the public. By participating, Marylanders can play an important role in preventing prescription drug misuse and protecting their loved ones and communities.

MedChi Plaintiff In Re: MultiPlan Health Insurance Provider Litigation

MedChi is a plaintiff in the In Re: MultiPlan Health Insurance Provider Litigation, a federal antitrust case alleging that MultiPlan and major health insurers colluded to suppress out-of-network reimbursement rates paid to physicians and other providers.

The case is now in active discovery. At the February 27th case management conference, the Court cleared the way for depositions of MultiPlan representatives and required the company to produce key internal records. The last status conference was April 9, 2026, we will share further updates once available.

On a related note, co-lead counsel Matt Lavin has joined Gilbert LLP and will continue leading the case in his new role. This change does not affect the case, our organization's participation in any way, or your case if you have joined the litigation.

Members who believe they've been impacted by MultiPlan's practices are encouraged to reach out to an attorney.
