CEO's Message

MedChi, The Maryland State Medical Society, strongly supports the Maryland Department of Health and Governor Wes Moore’s statement last week reaffirming the critical importance of vaccination in protecting the health of Marylanders.

Vaccines remain one of the safest and most effective tools for preventing serious illness, reducing hospitalizations, and safeguarding the strength of our healthcare system. Clear, science-based leadership helps ensure that physicians and public health professionals can continue providing the highest standard of care.

Maryland’s physicians rely on clear, evidence-driven guidance to care for patients with confidence and integrity. The Maryland Department of Health and Governor Moore have shown mindful leadership by reaffirming the foundational role of vaccination in public health. Their commitment to science, transparency, and collaboration strengthens trust in our healthcare system and supports physicians on the front lines of care.

Maryland has a long tradition of advancing public health through collaboration, evidence, and sound policy. We appreciate the Governor and the Maryland Department of Health for their steady guidance, commitment to transparency, and consistent partnership with the physician community.

MedChi President, Dr. Eric Wargotz, states “We stand in unwavering solidarity with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in upholding the evidence-based childhood immunization schedule. Science-led medicine must remain insulated from shifting political winds. The AAP’s 2026 recommendations are the gold standard, developed through decades of peer-reviewed data to protect children from 18 preventable diseases. Deviating from this proven path based on federal directives that lack a clinical basis compromises the safety of our most vulnerable patients. We urge all physicians to continue following the AAP Schedule, and parents to trust the expertise of their pediatricians.”

MedChi will continue working closely with state leaders, healthcare partners, and Maryland’s physicians to ensure accurate information, strong vaccination efforts, and the protection of all Maryland residents.
