Annual Meeting Recap

We have a running joke that it's always a beautiful day outside when we are "stuck" inside for MedChi's annual meeting, but I can honestly say that I don't mind spending a lovely fall day in this way. This was especially true this year, as we gathered in Hanover, Maryland on Saturday, October 26 for our 2024 Annual Meeting & Fall House of Delegates Meeting. The passion and engagement of our members is truly inspiring, and I enjoy seeing old friends and making new ones. Here are a few highlights I want to share:

  • A robust, highly engaging panel discussion on AI in medicine was curated and led by Padmini Ranasinghe, MD. We welcomed AMA Board Chair Michael Suk, MD; AMA Senior Attorney Kim Horvath; Senator Clarence Lam, MD; and MHCC's David Sharp for a policy discussion that is only the start of Dr. Ranasinghe's efforts to leverage the power of organized medicine to address physicians' interests related to AI.
  • Speaking of Dr. Ranasinghe: she was inaugurated as MedChi's 177th President. MedChi is proud to be led by this internationally recognized leader in medicine, steadfast advocate for her profession, and thoroughly inspiring individual.
  • MedChi recognized several legislative leaders for their support of Maryland's physicians and patients: Senator Pam Beidle, Senator Katherine Klausmeier, and Delegate Kenneth Kerr.
  • Our House of Delegates adopted a comprehensive package of policy items that will ensure that MedChi's continues to address threats to tort reform, scope of practice, and many other issues that impact medicine in Maryland.

Check back in future issues of MedChi News for more details about the meeting. And whether you're stuck inside or getting plenty of time outside, we hope you have a lovely autumn!

Multi-state Licensing Issues: Challenges and Solutions

Multi-state licensing poses significant challenges for professionals, especially physicians. Managing multiple state licenses requires adhering to each state’s unique laws, regulations, and professional standards. Failure to comply can lead to serious consequences, including loss of licensure. Physicians must stay proactive with renewal deadlines and regulatory requirements to avoid practicing without proper licensing. Additionally, professionals should seek guidance from experienced counsel if they face accusations of unlicensed practice or violations of professional conduct. Understanding these complexities is crucial for maintaining compliance across states. To schedule a consultation about multistate licensing, contact The Law Firm of J.W. Stafford  at 410-210-4737.
