Boise School District School Nurses & District's Nursing Program.
What:
A special celebration to recognize Boise School District's School Nursing Program turning 100 this school year!
Why:
The District's nursing program is one of our nation's first school nursing programs, having started in the District in 1919. To recognize the important role school nurses play in the health of our community's children (Better Health. Better Learning), the District will hold a special celebraton honoring the rich 100 year history of school nurses in Boise's schools. This celebration coincides with National School Nurse Week - May 6th through the 12th, 2019.
A Governor's Proclamation declaring Wednesday, May 8, 2019 as "School Nurse Day" in Idaho will be presented.

When/Where:
On Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 9:15 a.m. school nurses throughtout the Boise School District will gather together at the District Services Center, 8169 W. Victory Road, Boise, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the District's school nursing program.
Visuals:
Century old nursing memorabilia will be on display, Governor Brad Little's Proclamation recognizing "School Nurse Day" in Idaho will be presented, as will the presentation of the District's annual award for School Nurse of the Year. In addition, Hawthone Elementary School Health Technician
Michelle Diehl
(pictured above) will appear dressed in historic nursing attire, which was typical in 1919. She will ride her horse, which was common transportation for school nurses in the early 1900s.

About Health Services in Boise School District
The goal of the Health Services department is the promotion of optimal health, the prevention of disease and support of comprehensive health education. The Boise School District currently has a full-time registered Nurse at every secondary school in the district. A team consisting of a Registered Nurse and a Health Technician work together to meet the needs of 2-3 schools at the elementary level.
- Health Promotion: Registered Nurses assist students in acquiring health knowledge and developing attitudes conducive to healthful living. The Registered Nurses complete vision, dental, scoliosis, height and weight screenings. They also implement the state communicable disease programs. Health Technicians, under the direction of the Registered Nurses, maintain necessary student health records, disseminate health information and assist with health screening of students.
- Chronic Disease Management: Registered Nurses assist students in meeting needs resulting from disease, accidents, congenital defects or psycho-social disorders. The Health Technicians assist the Registered Nurses in providing routine and emergency medical care.
- Health Curriculum: Registered Nurses assist the classroom teacher with Health curriculum in the areas of dental hygiene, health and illness, blood borne diseases and growth and development in grades K-6.
- Consultation: Registered Nurses are members of their school's Problem Solving Intervention Team and assist with student evaluations, crisis intervention, home visits and community referrals. They provide health consultation to parents, teachers and other members of the team.
