What Happens When Teachers Trade
Places With Police for the Day?

What:
Boise School District teachers will trade positions with Boise Police officers for the day as part of a unique initiative to raise public awareness of what police and teachers do and to develop broad-based support for teachers and police. The intent is to honor teachers and police and learn about the way both police and teachers interact with the community.
When:
Thursday, September 27 & Friday, September 28, 2018.
Who:
The following Boise School DistrictTeachers and Boise Police Officers will trade places for the day:
- On Thursday, September 27th, Boise Police Officers Rob Rainford and Ryan Thueson will teach at Hillside Junior High School (3536 W. Hill Rd.), in Mrs. Rider’s class, room 115 and Officers Tim Beaudoin and Anthony Coils will teach at Timberline High School (701 E. Boise Ave.) in Mrs. Goddard’s class, room 221. In addition, Boise Police Officers/civilians will rotate through both Taft and Maple Grove elementary schools throughout the day in Mrs. Holder and Mrs. Prohaska’s classes.
- Specific times and locations for the school visits on Thursday, September 27th are as follows:
- Hillside Junior High: 7:45 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
- Timberline High School: 7:45 a.m. - 3:07 p.m.
- Taft & Maple Grove Elementary Schools: 8:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
- On Friday, September 28th, Boise School District Teachers Kelly Holder, Margaret Rider and Maura Goddard will spend the entire day and evening with Boise Police participating in track driving, room clearing and other scenarios, including participating in a Friday night ride-along with police. Specific times and locations for the police visits on Friday, September 28th are as follows:
- Teachers will meet at the Boise Police Station at 8:30 a.m. at 333 N. Mark Stall Place, Boise, then head to the Idaho POST academy driving track in Meridian by 9:00 a.m.
- At 11 a.m., teachers will head to the BPD shooting range to take part in the shoot/don’t shoot scenarios and meeting new officers in the police academy.
- At 1:30 p.m., teachers will eat lunch with command staff members at the main police station.
- From 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., teachers will sit down with both detectives from the Special Victims Unit and School Resource Officer Unit.
- At 3:00 p.m., teachers will attend a police briefing before proceeding to their ride along portion of the day that will conclude at 7:00 p.m.
Media Visuals:
- At Maple Grove and Taft Elementary, Boise Police will bring Scout, the BPD "outreach dog," and visit a number of classrooms. The officers will talk to students about what the K-9 unit does and talk in general about what it's like to be a police officer. Time on Thursday TBD. Contact BPD Media Line to coordinate.
- At Hillside Junior High, Boise Police will teach a US History 9 lesson for 5 periods, and at Timberline High School police officers will teach American Government for 5 periods.
- Teachers will be driving police cars at the Idaho POST academy driving track in Meridian on Friday after 9 a.m. Teachers will also be participating in activities at the BPD shooting range after 11 a.m.
- The schools will honor police officers by providing them with school t-shirts, and officers will eat in the cafeteria with the students. At the Boise Police Department, a lunch with Police Commanders will be held to honor the teachers participating in the program.
