CO-NAMING CEREMONY FOR DON CARLOS A. MARTÍNEZ
 
Washington Heights, NY-- Tomorrow, November 1st, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Congress Member Adriano Espaillat and the Comité de Prevención de Alcoholismo y Drogadicción, NY Don Carlos A. Martínez will be hosting a street co-naming ceremony to honor the life and legacy of Don Carlos A. Martínez. 
 
Don Carlos was an empowering community leader and staunch advocate for individuals with substance use disorders in New York City. The southeast corner of West 165th Street and Audubon Avenue will be co-named Carlos Alberto Martínez Way.
 
In 2002, Don Carlos, joined by others, created the Committee for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Addiction, with the mission of helping alcoholic patients and drug users who needed help but were afraid to seek it because of the stigma linked to mental health and substance abuse.  
 
Don Carlos, among many other achievements, fought to change perceptions and systems that catalogued patients with substance use disorders as psychiatry patients, successfully managing that 8 New York hospitals assigned special facilities and targeted responses to care for substance dependent patients.

Washington Heights, NY-- Mañana, 1 de Noviembre, el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez, el Congresista Adriano Espaillat y el Comité de Prevención de Alcoholismo y Drogadicción, NY Don Carlos A. Martínez sostendrán una ceremonia de co-nombramiento de calle en honor a la vida y legado de Don Carlos A. Martínez. 
 
Don Carlos fue un líder comunal comprometido con el empoderamiento de aquellos más vulnerables en nuestra comunidad y un firme defensor de las personas con trastornos por uso de sustancias en la ciudad de Nueva York. La esquina sureste de la calle 165 y la avenida Audubon será co-nombrada Carlos Alberto Martínez Way.   
  
En 2002, Don Carlos, junto con otros, creó el Comité para la Prevención de Alcoholismo y Drogadicción, con la misión de ayudar a pacientes de consumo de drogas y alcohol que necesitaban ayuda pero temían buscarla debido al estigma relacionado con la salud mental y el abuso de sustancias.  
 
Don Carlos, entre muchos logros, luchó para cambiar las percepciones y los sistemas que catalogaban a los pacientes con trastornos por uso de sustancias como pacientes de psiquiatría, logrando que 8 hospitales de Nueva York asignaran instalaciones especiales y respuestas focalizadas para cuidar de esta demográfica.
