Media Invitation: New Bike Lane Sweeper Unveiling with Demos by

Mayor Danny Avula and CAO Odie Donald

RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Department of Transportation (RDOT) invites you to the official unveiling and demonstration of the city’s new mini sweeper this Friday, April 17. This event highlights our ongoing efforts to improve street maintenance and safety across the city.

 Event Details

  • Date: Friday, April 17
  • Time: 10 a.m.
  • Media set-up by 9:45
  • Location: Brook Road and School Street
  • Special Guests: Mayor Danny Avula and CAO Odie Donald

Watch Mayor Avula and CAO Donald take the mini sweeper for a spin to clean the bike lanes, showing how this new equipment will help keep Richmond streets clean and safer.

This is a great opportunity to see the new equipment in action and speak with city officials about bike lane safety and maintenance improvements.

Details on the sweeper:

The new bike sweeper, a MadVac LN 50, is intended for operation during warm weather conditions. It’s smaller than the MF Broom Unit and is designed to maintain safe, debris-free bike lanes during spring and summer, when conditions like pollen, sand, and other debris can make cycling hazardous. Due to its open cab design, it can’t be used during cold, rainy, inclement weather conditions.

“This investment reflects both long-term planning and worker safety,” said Torrence Robinson, DPW Deputy Director of Operations and Maintenance. “The MadVac LN 50 will work alongside the all-weather MF Broom to provide comprehensive bike lane maintenance throughout the year. Keeping streets clear for all modes of travel is part of the city’s Vision Zero and Complete Streets approach to transportation. We look forward to showing it off at the upcoming unveiling.”

Residents are encouraged to report debris or maintenance needs in bike lanes through RVA311.com or by calling 3-1-1.
