1. Truth and Trust in the Media: What is media literacy education?

This session will introduce media literacy education by looking at the issues we have faced over the last several years regarding mis/disinformation and the context of fake news within the US and in the Portuguese community.

a. Do we culturally accept the news media as a good quality source of information?
b. Have we lost trust in the way in which information is provided to us in the US and in context as someone who watches news from outside sources such as RTP?

This session will offers a global look at how the mis/disinformation cycle is worldwide and problematic.

2. Civic Engagement, Civic Society & the Media

This session will discuss the value of voting despite how conflicted our world has become. Resources for where to get viable information will be shown and how the media is also a part of the division

a. Does voting matter?
b. How do we as a culture feel represented/misrepresented in our community?
c. Does the Census help us to be more reflected in civic society?
d. How does this transfer to learning in our schools and community both in the US and in Portugal?

3. Cyber Security, Digital Safety, & the Algorithm — spamming, digital footprint

This session will discuss the digital footprint. Who we are online matters and what we do shapes how the algorithm perceives us. There will also be a discussion on what the EU data privacy laws look like in comparison to ours in the US such as “The Right to be Forgotten.”

c. How does the algorithm help/hurt to influence the Portuguese community?
d. How much control do we have over these social online spaces?

Health and the Media—We have been living through a pandemic, and health information has become questioned and questionable. Public health issues have always been a tool for media literacy whether it was from the “Stop Smoking,” “Just Say No” or other media campaigns; the media has been a tool and a source for informing the public. We are in the middle of a world shift with climate. Some dispute what they are seeing and others are worried that we are not doing enough. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations has consistently been speaking to this point and discussing that we are in the middle of a global crisis.

b. What can be done as a Portuguese community to contribute helping so we can provide a better life for our families and in doing so—the world?
