Little Qualicum River Erosion Project Completes

The Little Qualicum River Erosion Protection project has now been completed, protecting the Town’s primary drinking water infrastructure and nearby properties from erosion.

This work was approved for significant funding for both the design and construction phases, including $843,700 from the Province’s Disaster Resilience and Innovation Funding (DRIF) program, and $125,000 through the Union of BC Municipalities’ – Disaster Risk Mitigation and Climate Adaptation program.

Located in the lower Little Qualicum River, the project stabilized the riverbank adjacent to the Town’s River Wellfield, which supplies approximately 90% of the community’s potable water. The work also incorporated habitat enhancement to support fish and river health.

The project was developed with support from hydrotechnical engineers, environmental professionals, and regulatory agencies, including Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Construction began in the summer of this year, in line with regulatory approvals and environmental permitting and was completed on October 23, on time and within budget.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have such a high-quality water supply in Qualicum Beach,” says Chris Stanger, Operations Manager. “Thinking ahead and protecting our critical infrastructure now is key to safeguarding the integrity of our water supply for this generation and generations to come.”
