The Town of Qualicum Beach is proud to announce that its tap water has been named the “Best of the Best” in the BC & Yukon Tap Water Taste Test.
This friendly competition, hosted by the BC Water & Waste Association (BCWWA) during its annual conference, invited water providers from across BC and the Yukon to compete. Samples were evaluated by appearance, aroma, taste, mouth feel, aftertaste, and overall impression, with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of water systems in protecting public health and the environment.
The winning sample, drawn from a regular residential faucet, was entered by the Town’s Manager of Operations, Chris Stanger, who thought ‘why not’ enter a sample. Although confident of the water’s high quality, he was not prepared for the high praise received from the judges. The Town not only won in its population category, but also achieved the highest score of all categories, outperforming cities with populations over 100,000 with much more sophisticated systems.
The Town is fortunate to draw its water from two aquifers: the River wellfield and the Berwick wellfield. Both wellfields are high-quality and quantity groundwater sources that require minimal chemical treatment. The primary supply comes from the River wellfield, with the Berwick wellfield resting over the winter season and then supplying additional water during peak summer times. The River wellfield is a high-production aquifer in the delta of the Little Qualicum River that provides a sustainable production of water before it overflows into the ocean.
“This award is a testament to the exceptional quality of our local aquifers and the expertise of our Operations team who manages them,” said Mayor Teunis Westbroek. “It confirms what residents already know - Qualicum Beach really does have some of the best water around.”
