Media Resource Center now partially open
The Media Resource Center began lending and accepting back overdue resources on Aug. 1, 2020. Please check to see if you have any items taken out prior to March 2020. These items should be returned to us as soon as possible. With Pastors moving to other churches and Bible studies put on hold, we need to try to locate all resources and have them returned before they are forgotten.

If you need to readjust return dates, please contact Karen Campolieto, Media Resource Coordinator and Archives Assistant. The Media Center will not be available for personal pick-up, but you can mail materials until further notice as our offices are closed to the public.
Need a distraction? Grab a book
Experts tell us that reading can be a healthy distraction, as well as a comfort, during uncertain or chaotic times.

Our friends at The United Methodist Publishing House and Abingdon Press have offered a collection of titles, some new and some beloved favorites, that may be just what we need right now. Check them out!

The Media Resource Center has Rev. Adam Hamilton's The Walk and Revolutionary Kingdom by Rev. Mike Slaughter, available for lending.
How may United Methodists observe Heritage Months?
Each year, The United Methodist Church observes five history or heritage months that recognize and appreciate the ways women and people of several different races and cultures have contributed to the richness of its common life. These include Black History Month (February), Women’s History Month (March), Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (May), Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15), and Native American Heritage Month (November).

The United Methodist Church remains a predominantly white denomination (close to 90%) in the U.S. Further, most United Methodist congregations - 98% - tend to be mono-ethnic. So when most United Methodists observe a particular history or heritage month, with the exception of Women’s History Month, there may be few people, if any, in the congregation with that heritage and culture.

These realities in The United Methodist Church make the observance of history and heritage months at once rich with possibilities for significant learning and growth, but also rife with opportunities for racial or ethnic stereotyping and inappropriate and potentially racist cultural tourism or appropriation.

So how might United Methodists learn about and celebrate other people, races, and cultures in positive ways? Click here for 5 key principles to put into practice.
Resources of the month
How to Fight Racism by Jemar Tisby- NEW!  The How to Fight Racism Study Guide, used together with the How to Fight Racism Video Study, provides groups and individuals with practical tools and suggestions, along with real-world examples of change, to enable them to become proactive initiators of racial justice.

Tisby offers an array of actionable items to confront racism in our relationships and in everyday life through a simple framework--the A.R.C. Of Racial Justice--that helps readers consistently interrogate their own actions and maintain a consistent posture of anti-racist action. This book is for anyone who believes it is time to stop compromising with racism and courageously confront it.

The study guide, along with the video study, offers readers the opportunity to be part of the solution to racial problems and suggests that the application of these principles can offer us hope that will transform our nation and the world. Tisby encourages us to reject passivity and become active participants in the struggle for human dignity across racial and ethnic lines. Readers of the book will come away with a clear model for how to think about race in productive ways and a compelling call to dismantle a social hierarchy long stratified by skin color.

Recommended Resource- "We at Fayetteville UMC are very grateful for this inspirational resource you have provided. The Soul Reset was invaluable to our preparation for Easter. If you have anyone asking about this resource, please invite them to call me. I will be happy to share our experience." - Rev. Deborah O'Connor-Slater

Soul Reset by Junius Dotson-  Everything was going fine . . . until it wasn’t. For Reverend Junius B. Dotson it took an actual breakdown during a funeral for him to realize he needed a reset. As he recalls his own journey through grief, depression, burnout, and emotional breakdown, Dotson is passionate about calling for a Soul Reset for pastors, church leaders, and all disciples of Jesus Christ.

This is a 6-week churchwide study for everyone who moves at breakneck speed through their daily lives, often relying only on their own strength to bring God’s kingdom on earth. Jesus shows us a different way, an easier, unforced rhythm of what kingdom work looks like. It’s a balance of work, rest, play, worship, exercise, and eating well—spiritual practices that keep our souls hydrated and healthy as we do the work of the church in the world. Soul Reset: Breakdown, Breakthrough, and the Journey to Wholeness includes a book; a DVD; downloadable video segments; age-level discussion guides for children, youth, and adults; sermon starters; and more.

Soul Reset is a call for the church and all of Jesus’ disciples to reset and reorder their lives around spiritual practices, to learn to walk through our difficult seasons with our souls connected to the source of Living Water so that we don’t burn out or break down. And if we do burn out or break down, we learn to lift one another up and point one another back to Jesus.

Revolutionary Kingdom by Rev. Mike Slaughter - What exactly is a disciple, and how will we know if we have made one? There are three core values that a disciple embodies: undiluted devotion to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, a Kingdom of God worldview, and a missional lifestyle.

In Revolutionary Kingdom: Following the Rebel Jesus, author and Pastor Mike Slaughter explores why we must exchange comfortable cultural worldviews and values for the radical requirements of living out the Kingdom of God on Planet Earth. When God’s people get serious about this call, it’s revolutionary. Jesus himself was the most radical revolutionary who ever lived and provided us a vision of a kingdom worth dying for. Welcome to the revolution!
