GOYA Chief Executive Unanue Must Immediately Apologize For His
Comments Praising President Trump
"
Yesterday's
comments
made by Goya Foods Chief Executive Robert Unanue were misguided and ignorant to say the least. I demand that the Chief Executive Director immediately apologize to the Latino community for the comments made praising President Donald Trump during yesterday's White house Press Conference.
The GOYA franchise has been built on the support of the Latino community, which have turned it into a household name for millions of Latinos across the globe. In contrast, this President has constantly denigrated the Latino community in the U.S., often cataloguing them as thugs and criminals, has pushed for zero-tolerance policies that have caused hundreds of thousands of family separations and has continued to eradicate the already meager protections enjoyed by DREAMERS and foreign students in the country. He has allowed for the Novel Coronavirus pandemic to rip through Black and Latino communities, with the result of turning these communities 3 times more likely to contract COVID-19 and almost twice as likely to die from the virus than their white counterparts.
Those calling for the boycott of GOYA have every right to do so and Unanue must realize his company's social responsibility and the negative impact his comments have had on our Latino communities. We expect nothing less than an apology and a full retraction of his comments."
