New York Needs A Disaster Relief Fund For Undocumented Immigrants Immediately

"I want to thank George Soros's Open Society Foundation for their $20 million contribution to help undocumented immigrants who were left out of the coronavirus economic stimulus package. Each year, our undocumented brothers and sisters contribute billions of dollars to our economy. Yet, they receive a minimal fraction in return when disaster impacts their communities.

Throughout our economic pause and partial shutdown, undocumented immigrants have continued to report to work, serving on the first line of defense against the current health pandemic. They are those New Yorkers who make our quarantine possible by supplying the services we rely on in order to stay home. They are those New Yorkers who continue working so that all essential services in our City keep running. Yet, they are those New Yorkers without job security or the benefits that would allow them to stay home. We know that the majority of New Yorkers impacted by COVID-19 are those living in the poorest, immigrant, Latino, Black, and Asian zip codes. This donation will go someway in providing urgently needed financial support for millions of undocumented immigrants who are struggling with the devastating impact of COVID-19.

Today, I am asking the New York  philanthropist community  to add their contributions to the Open Society's Immigrant Emergency Relief program to help struggling New Yorkers who did not receive a stimulus check. I am also reinforcing my call on the State and the City to create a disaster relief fund to help undocumented communities. Recently, California became the first State in the nation to create a disaster relief fund in partnership with philanthropists to provide undocumented immigrants with financial support.

In partnership with the private sector, our State and City governments can create a Disaster Relief Fund to help undocumented immigrants, Latino, Black, and Asian communities who have suffered the highest rates of deaths in the City.  New York City is known globally as the financial capital of the world. Let's be worthy of this title by protecting and helping our most vulnerable communities when a crisis emerges."

Nueva York Urgentemente Necesita Un Fondo De Ayuda Por Desastres Para Inmigrantes Indocumentados
 
"Quiero agradecer a la Open Society Foundation de George Soros por su contribución de $20 millones para ayudar a los inmigrantes indocumentados que quedaron fuera del paquete de estímulo económico del coronavirus. Cada año, nuestros hermanos y hermanas indocumentados aportan miles de millones de dólares a nuestra economía. Sin embargo, reciben una fracción mínima a cambio cuando un desastre impacta sus comunidades.
 
A lo largo de nuestra pausa económica y cierre parcial, los inmigrantes indocumentados han seguido trabajando, sirviendo en la primera línea de defensa contra la actual pandemia de salud. Son aquellos neoyorquinos que hacen posible nuestra cuarentena al proporcionar los servicios en los que confiamos para quedarnos en casa. Son aquellos neoyorquinos que continúan trabajando para que todos los servicios esenciales en nuestra ciudad sigan funcionando. Sin embargo, son esos neoyorquinos sin seguridad laboral y sin los beneficios que les permitirían quedarse en casa. Sabemos que la mayoría de los neoyorquinos afectados por COVID-19 son aquellos que viven en los códigos postales más pobres, inmigrantes, Latinos, Negros y Asiáticos. Esta donación contribuirá de gran manera a proporcionar el apoyo financiero que se necesita con urgencia para millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que luchan con el devastador impacto de COVID-19.  
 
Hoy, le pido a la comunidad filantrópica de Nueva York que agregue sus contribuciones al programa de Ayuda de Emergencia de Inmigrantes de la Open Society para ayudar a los neoyorquinos con dificultades que no recibieron un cheque de estímulo. También estoy reforzando mi llamado al Estado y a la Ciudad para crear un fondo de ayuda por desastres para las comunidades indocumentadas. Recientemente, California se convirtió en el primer estado de la nación en crear un fondo de ayuda por desastre en asociación con filántropos para brindar apoyo financiero a inmigrantes indocumentados.  
 
En colaboración con el sector privado, nuestros gobiernos estatales y municipales pueden crear un fondo de ayuda por desastres para ayudar a los inmigrantes indocumentados, las comunidades Latinas, Negras y Asiáticas que han sufrido las tasas más altas de muertes en la ciudad. La ciudad de Nueva York es conocida mundialmente como la capital financiera del mundo. Seamos dignos de este título al proteger y ayudar a nuestras comunidades más vulnerables cuando surge una crisis."
