Match Day Anticipation

Match Day Joy!
Letter from the Board Chair
Dear Medical Alumni Board Members,

As we prepare for our next Medical Alumni Board meeting on June 1, 2019 at 8 am in the Med-Dent
Buildi
ng (SW 107), it follows a very busy season as Medical Students join the ranks of alumni and move to their new locations. CURA registration began on MATCH Day and is continuing this week during the Senior Class activities. Registration by Alumni has been enthusiastic and the staff will keep us aware of the need to register as mentors.

We had
a fantastic time in February at the Awards Banquet with the awardees pictured below. Our beloved Dr. Donald Knowlan was honored with the Founders Medal in April at a sold-out event and an endowed scholarship in his name is being established.

We will have to say goodbye to several loyal members of the Medical Alumni Board in June and the
Nominations process for new members is ongoing. We will be asking all Board Members if they would
like to change their Committee Assignment to one more suited to their talents.

The staff is at full-strength now and will be introduced at our meeting. The June 1 meeting is the
weekend of Undergraduate Reunion, so those of you from out of town will need to make hotel
reservations early. Further information about the Reunion weekend events and special hotel rates will
be provided.

Many thanks to all!

 A Legend in His Time
Dr. Donald Knowlan (R'60, W'82, H'04), aka "Coach", was feted in style for his 90th birthday earlier this month  at the 18th Annual Founders Day Celebration.  In addition to the support of his family, over 200 guests - including current and past Georgetown faculty, alumni, and students - paid tribute to one of Georgetown's most cherished alumni.

In between many toasts and roasts from current faculty members and students, one of the outstanding moments of the night was the dedication of the class of M'15 class gift to The Donald M. Knowlan Endowed Scholarship fund.  More than $55,000 has already been committed toward this scholarship, and additional donations are still being solicited so that the scholarship can become fully endowed at its goal of $100,000. Please reach out to Jupiter El-Asmar at Jupiter.El-Asmar@georgetown.edu  or 202-687-3679 if you are interested in donating to this fund.

The highlight of the night surely came when Dr Knowlan held the audience's rapt attention with highlights and vignettes from his remarkable career.  He spoke of Dr. Harold Jegher's push to move third and fourth year medical students to the clinical ward instead of the traditional classroom.  He spoke of the GUSOM leaders who searched tirelessly for the best talent as future program directors and medical student instructors.  And he reminded us all that it is the teacher who is the true learner ending with the quip "I've been fooling you all along - I'm the one who's been learning from you!"  Click here to listen to Dr. Knowlan's speech.

The evening ended with the presentation of a wonderful birthday cake surprise and the dedication of a new medal in Dr. Knowlan's name that will be awarded to the graduating senior in each class who best exemplifies the values of being the most outstanding clinical teacher.
