Letter from the Board Chair
|
Dear Medical Alumni Board Members,
It seems like we just welcomed the new members of the Medical Alumni Board at our meeting in October 2019 which was followed by the excitement of Medical Reunion as will be discussed below. Thanks to Communications Chair Dr. Nancy Ripp Clark for her work on this newsletter and other communications issues.
Dr. Joseph Riggs, a long-time active member of the Medical Alumni Board passed away shortly after our October meeting. Many of us from the Alumni Community and staff member Samantha Poremba attended his services in New Jersey this past November. His loyalty to Georgetown and the Medical School has been outstanding and the University, working with the Riggs Family, is planning a Memorial Mass to be held at Dahlgren Chapel. The date is pending and we will notify you promptly.
Dr. Daphne Keshishian, Chair of the Nominations Committee, will begin the work of opening the Nominations selection process for the July 2020 Term. She will present the criteria and timeline for the Nominations process at our meeting on February 7, 2020.
After our meeting, we have the pleasure of attending the first of two Awards Celebrations. The first is given by the University Alumni Association to Medical Alumni and Faculty as noted below. Dean Mitchell will receive the John Carroll Award in Bermuda in April, 2020. Thanks to Awards Committee Chair, Dr. Caggiano and his vice-chair, Dr. Steve Luck, for their hard work on Awards.
Philanthropy Committee has been hard at work on issues discussed at our last meeting and an update will be presented at the meeting.
Thanks to all of you for your hard work and making sure that the Medical Alumni Board remains a strong support to the Students and Leadership at the Medical School.
Sincerely,
Regina Torsney-Durkin, M.D. C'73, M'77

Almost fifty GUSOM students spent a festive evening with sixteen alumni physicians this past November in the Alumni House on campus for the
World of Choices event. Physicians were grouped together by specialty at high-top tables and students traveled among them, discussing specialty choices, lifestyles and personal experiences. A rewarding evening was had by all.

One M2 student wrote afterward, "the ratio of alumni to students was a dream come true! We were paired off in groups of 2, maybe 3, as we networked with Hoya medical alumni. I can't wait for next year!"

Dine with a Doc
is a program that connects current Georgetown Medical Students with our alumni. The aim of this program is to give students an intimate opportunity to learn more about the field of medicine from a personal perspective and what it means to be a doctor.
The alumni and their spouses or colleagues who volunteer to host these dinners are the core of this program. It is their generosity that allows students to have these unforgettable experiences. The medical students truly appreciate the time they take to share their experience, advice and support.
If you are interested in hosting a dinner please
to sign up online, or contact student coordinator Stephanie Michaels (M'23)
to set up a mutually convenient date.
Dinners can be scheduled at your home or a local restaurant.
