How does this affect DOT Medical Examiners?
This new rule will eliminate the "Vision Exemption" for drivers. It will now allow the monocular driver (they meet the standard in one eye only) to be certified to drive a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce
The certification process will be similar to that followed by the process for Insulin Treated Diabetic Drivers (ITDM).
The rule will require the driver to have the new MCSA 5871 form filled out by an ophthalmologist PRIOR to coming in for their exam. It will be the medical examiners responsibility to make a final certification decision based on the review of this form and the examination findings.
The driver will also have to pass a road test prior to driving.
The maximum certification is for 12 months.
