" The Battle of Brandy Station"
Joseph McKinney
President, Brandy Station Foundation
Friday, May 4, 2012     2:00 pm

Joseph McKinney will be presenting a powerpoint on the Battle of Brandy Station on Friday following the installation luncheon. This will be followed by a tour of the grounds (weather permitting).

"The Battle of Brandy Station was one of history's greatest cavalry engagements with over 20,000 troops, including 17,000 cavalry, engaged in battle. Although the Union advance was repelled, the overwhelming dominance of the Confederate cavalry was broken.

The Graffiti House (below) served as a field hospital for the South during this and other local battles during the war.  It also served as a headquarters facility for the Federal forces during the winter encampment of 1863-64.  Soldiers from both sides made drawings and signed their names and units on the walls.  Rediscovered in 1993, much has been preserved."

The Inn at Kelly's Ford

Inn at Kelly's FordInn at Kellys Ford is your entry to the casual elegance of Virginias historic Hunt Country. Shortly after 1725 J.P. Kelly patented a tract of land 60 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and along the Rappahannock River. By 1773 the Kelly family owned land on both sides of the river. Ever since, the locality has been known as Kelly's Ford or Kellysville. From Colonial times until the Civil War Kelly's Mill and other enterprises were a thriving center of trade in Culpeper County. The canals along the river were the main arteries of transportation for the Piedmont area of Virginia.
