During National Hispanic Heritage Month, the School of Medicine’s Latin American Student Association (LMSA) is bringing awareness to the health needs of the Latine community and building a sense of community for Latine graduate students across Georgetown’s campuses through thoughtful programming.

While washing her clothes at a local laundromat as a graduate student, Roxanne Mirabal-Beltran, PhD, RN, assistant professor at the School of Nursing, realized she was surrounded by Spanish-speaking women and children—the population that she wanted to work with. “Being a Latina, it is very important to me to be a researcher out in the community,” Mirabal-Beltran said. “Connecting with the community allows me to get in touch with my own self.”

Representing chemistry, neuroscience, tumor biology, biochemistry & molecular biology, and pharmacology & physiology, five fellows from across the university have been selected to comprise the first cohort of the Georgetown University Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (GU IMSD), a training program launched in early 2022 that reflects the institutional commitment to diversity and scientific workforce development. Leveraging an interdisciplinary network of more than 60 faculty across seven graduate programs and departments, the GU IMSD program will develop a diverse cadre of scholars prepared for careers in the biomedical sciences. Office of Emergency Management Recognizes National Preparedness Month on September 29

National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness about ways to prepare for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. The Georgetown University Office of Emergency Management, along with the Georgetown University Police Department, the University Fire Marshal, and the Office of Environmental Health & Safety, will be present on the podium between the Medical-Dental Building and Dahlgren Memorial Library on September 29, 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. Please stop by to learn more about emergency preparedness, crime prevention, fire safety, and environmental health & safety, and come get some give-aways!

The GUMC Subcommittee on Faculty Diversity and Inclusion of the Faculty Development Committee is seeking 2-4 new members to serve a three-year term.
