Supporting gay rights in the 1960s
Recently, Grace received an email from a professor at the Univ. of Puget Sound who is researching spiritual communities' support of LGBTQ rights. Grace Church came up in her research. In the late 1960s, the Mattachine Society, Inc. of New York (MSNY), an early gay rights organization, held meetings in Grace's parish hall. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) also held meetings at Grace. Their work included fighting employment discrimination, protecting gay bars, and compiling lists of sympathetic clergy, with help from Walter Welsh, and sympathetic psychiatrists and psychologists, with help from Upstate's Dr. Thomas Szasz. At the time, Syracuse’s district attorney declared “war” on obscenity material such as muscle magazines (similar to Playboy but depicting nude men). Pictured: Butch muscle magazine, 1966

Starting this fall: Two services
Beginning the Sunday after Labor Day, Grace Church will be offering worship services at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m. Adult education will be offered between the two services.

Donate backpacks in honor of Rosa & Judith
Over the next few weeks, we will be collecting backpacks for students in two Syracuse elementary schools. This annual backpack drive is held in honor of Grace's Rosa Clark, former principal of McKinley-Brighton Elementary, and Judith Brooks, former principal at Dr. King (pictured). There will be a donation bin at the sanctuary door. See Sue Keeter or Barb Slater with questions.

The purpose of this Monday night protest is to rein in the ICE facility in Salina. The protest will be held 5:30-7 p.m. at the corner of Old Liverpool & School Rds. Park at 506 Old Liverpool Rd.
July 30: Forum on ICE in Salina
Learn how the Town of Salina can address and control the ICE facility in Salina. This Thursday forum will be held at 6 p.m. at the Salina Free Library, 100 Belmont St., Mattydale.

Micron's impact on Water
Last week, a hearing on wastewater and Micron development was held by the Onondaga County Legislature’s environmental subcommittee. Speakers sounded the alarm over human health and environmental risks. Potential remedies were also shared by chemists and engineers. The proceedings were recorded and should be available on-line. The Haudenosaunee Arts Festival will be held this Sat., noon – 7 p.m. at Onondaga Community College. This free family festival celebrates Indigenous art, music, dance, food and culture. It's a fun day of learning, sharing and celebration.

Aug. 1: Finding Gobi author
