The science behind what we practice, continued.

There is lots of anecdotal evidence that supports a consistent meditation practice. It reduces stress, improves concentration, and restores calm, practitioners say. We’d say so too, which is why we often practice meditation in our asana classes.

Turns out, several studies have also suggested the benefits of meditation. Brain scans show that the brain literally changes with sustained meditation!

Sara Lazar, a neuroscientist at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, analyzed the brain scans of long-term meditators and found an increased amount of gray matter in the insula and sensory regions as well as the frontal cortex. There were also decreases in brain cell volume in the amygdala, which is responsible for fear, anxiety, and stress. The results of a test and control group suggest that the brain changes after just eight weeks of meditation.

There you have it! Another scientifically-backed reason to come to your mat this weekend!
