March 31, 2023

Good morning! First, I'd like to acknowledge Rachael and Bryan as March has been special (126 requests this month to start new chapters).

Each pulse check brings a response akin to 'We got this' 'Bring it on' or 'Let's change the world'"

I'm lucky. Thank you two.

Well, you've possibly heard the positive news regarding the Mediterranean diet this month? There’s always something, right? The Mediterranean diet is one of those things in medicine that is frequently studied and almost always ends up with a good outcome (like coffee, fruits, vegetables, and walking 😉).

As you may know, it was also voted the best diet for 2023 (for the sixth year in a row).

What exactly is in a Mediterranean diet?

Good question.

Previous study participants in the ‘Mediterranean arm’ were asked to eat:

Fresh fruits (3/day)

Vegetables (2/day)

Fish (especially fatty) seafood (3 servings/week) - tuna, salmon, anchovies

Tree nuts and peanuts (3 servings/week)

Legumes (3 servings/week)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) 4 tbsp/day

Whole grains (whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa (pronounced keen-wa)

And yes, here’s the line item you were waiting for…

Wine with meals (optional)

Berries, yum. I know they're fruit but feels like they deserve their own line

Greek yogurt (get it?)

That’s enough to fill us up, right?

Delicious.

On the flip side, foods that are not cool on the Mediterranean diet:

Heavily processed foods

Butter

Refined/processed hydrogenated oils

Processed (or any) red meats

Refined grains

Okay, that was the Mediterranean Diet. Which is in its own right exciting, because hey, tastes great, live longer. However, the subject line’s exciting news is that over the past 2 weeks, we have been fortunate to work with the producers at Good Morning America in preparation for National Walking Day (Wednesday, April 5). Their team has been fantastic to collaborate with and we are keeping our fingers crossed (nothing is guaranteed in media), but please do tune in to GMA next Wednesday just in case National Walking Day and Walk with a Doc is shared with the nation!

Oh! Before I forget, have you ever wondered if it was more important to get a little more sleep or get up and work out? Here you go.

Hint: See you in the park. I’ll bring the peanuts.

How about walking solving just about any problem? See! It's not just us.

It was a busy week for walking articles, here's one more, The Joys of a Walking Trip

maybe we'll see you Wednesday?

National Walking Day

April 5th has been circled on Walk with a Doc's calendar for months! While we tend to find every reason we can to brag about the life-changing power of walking, the 1st Wednesday of April always gives us a good excuse to take it up a notch. Take a look at some of the physical and mental health benefits of walking, then put on your party hat (a.k.a. walking shoes) and celebrate National Walking Day with a walk!
