The newest staff member of Salina Arts & Humanities is Program Assistant, Allie Fischer. Allie joined the team on February 10 after relocating from Lawrence, KS where she worked as a gallery director for the University of Kansas.

Allie is no stranger to the plains as she has extended family from the Miltonvale, Clay Center, and Sulphur Springs areas of north-central Kansas. She has fond memories of visiting their homes and the surrounding prairie as a child.

“I enjoy how close and easy it is to get to the country”, she said. “I am really excited to be close to the wide open space, the colorful skies, and the beauty of the prairie.”

Allie has a master’s degree in museum studies and an undergraduate degree in studio art, concentrating on mixed media and photo-based creations. Her recent work explores matriarchal themes and family lineage through stories.

Allie’s responsibilities at Arts & Humanities include administrative support for public art and River Festival visual arts programs, assisting with other SAH programs and events, answering phones and greeting visitors, and being responsible for the programs and operations of Artyopolis at the Festival. 

Not only does Allie have a heart for the prairie but she is also excited to align her creative interests with a community that is so positively engaged in the arts. She is excited to connect with artists, community members, and others that the department serves.

During a master’s class in public administration, Allie learned that it was important to listen first, then carefully respond, and finally to reflect on the results. “The arts are part of a complex system”, she said. “We need to remember there are many things to consider as we engage in creative practices and community conversations.”

Most importantly, she offered “I love being a Kansan. Visiting small towns and experiencing rural life while being an artist is rewarding.”
