Meet Superstar LUM Volunteer - Ashley
The Rev. Ashley Bonnes - LUM Camp Volunteer
|
Volunteers like the Rev. Ashley E. Bonnes are the cornerstone of Lafayette Urban Ministry, and LUM is honored to celebrate her as the Volunteer of the Month for July 2024. Ashley has been an integral part of LUM for over a decade, serving in various roles, including LUM board member & officer. Despite moving to Michigan, she and her husband Mark remain actively engaged with LUM. Ashley’s recent work with LUM Camp last week exemplifies her exceptional dedication and passion for service. As LUM Camp counselor, she and Mark, who was the LUM Camp chaplain, played pivotal roles in guiding and supporting the campers, ensuring they had a memorable and enriching experience.
When reflecting on “what she values in volunteering with LUM,” Ashley shared that, “I have pride in the amazing staff and volunteers at LUM; and I'm greatly encouraged by the kingdom work that LUM does in Lafayette and surrounding area ” She added that, “Often when we think about volunteering we think about how we're going to serve others and love them. Volunteering with LUM might surprise you - as you'll likely receive as much love, from staff/other volunteers and clients, as you had hoped to give. And LUM Camp is such a great example of that over and over again.” Her enthusiasm and commitment have been a source of inspiration to all who have had the pleasure of working with her.
Ashley’s dedication, compassion, and selfless service have made her an invaluable part of the LUM family. If you are inspired by Ashley’s story and would like to make a difference in our community, join the LUM team of dedicated volunteers. Unleashing Summer Magic: LUM Camp 2024
Adventure, Friendship & Learning for 83 Local Kids
LUM Camp is the highlight of the summer for 83 local children, ages 8 to 10, and this year was particularly special. LUM Campers reveled in a variety of activities, including campfires, archery, canoeing, s’mores, swimming, wall climbing, ziplining, arts and crafts, a giant swing, and creek exploring—many experiencing these thrills for the very first time. This year's theme LUM Animal Camp - Service and Support, unleashed summer magic with exciting events like a movie night showing Madagascar, meet-and-greets with service dogs, lessons on approaching working service animals, and an unforgettable encounter with exotic creatures from Silly Safaris. One memorable evening, LUM friends joined LUM Camp to sing songs, share dinner, enjoy an ice cream social, and interact informally with the campers. LUM Camp Friend Night, where board members and donors participated in the festivities, showcased the community spirit and commitment to the children's growth and happiness. The variety of activities fostered a sense of adventure and confidence, and the theme-related events taught valuable lessons about service and support. LUM is deeply grateful for the generosity that has made such a positive impact on these young lives. The support has ignited hope and joy, showing the children that they are valued and deserving of every opportunity. THANK YOU for believing in their dreams and helping to shape a brighter future for all.
