Celebrate National Be an Angel Day with Chimpanzee Angel

Angel

Today, August 22nd, is National Be An Angel Day - a day dedicated to showing kindness and compassion. At the Center for Great Apes, we have the perfect reason to celebrate… our very own chimpanzee Angel!

Angel has lived at the sanctuary for many years and is known for her playful spirit and social personality. True to her name, she’s a social butterfly who has enjoyed many friendships with fellow chimpanzees. Today, she shares her home with Mowgli, Kenya, Chipper, Natsu, Brooks, Murray, and her best friend, Chloe. Angel especially loves spending time grooming with Murray and relaxing with Chloe.

When it comes to enrichment, Angel has a few clear favorites. She adores flipping through magazines and watching movies. If her caregivers pull out a phone to play a video or scroll through TikTok, Angel is quick to come over and watch along! She’s also a fan of her daily greens, from romaine and kale to bok choy and iceberg.

At night, Angel often chooses to sleep outside under the stars, making cozy nests out of her blankets in the sanctuary’s aerial trailways. On stormy or chilly nights, though, she’ll carry her bedding inside to snuggle up in her warm nighthouse bedroom.

On this National Be An Angel Day, we’re reminded of Angel’s joyful presence and the kindness that makes her shine. By supporting the Center for Great Apes, you help ensure that Angel and all 66 orangutans and chimpanzees at the sanctuary can continue to live safely, happily, and with the care they deserve.

August is Make a Will Month

There’s a quiet peace that comes with planning for the future and making sure the people, places, and causes close to your heart are cared for.

August is Make-A-Will Month, and for many, it’s often a season of reflection. Whether you're sending a child off to college, caring for an aging parent, or thinking about the next chapter of your own journey, it's a time when many begin to consider their legacy.

At the Center for Great Apes, we are also thinking about the future, about how to ensure the orangutans and chimpanzees in our care will always have the support they need for their lifetime. Many of our apes, like Cahaya, just 5 years old, and Bentley, only 16, may live another 40 or even 50 years. That’s a promise we’re committed to keeping.

You can help us keep it.

Including the Center for Great Apes in your will, trust, or estate plan is a powerful and personal way to ensure these incredible beings have lifelong protection, even long after we're gone.

Your legacy can provide:

  • Healthy diets and daily enrichment
  • Medical care tailored to aging apes
  • Maintenance and expansion of forested habitats and aerial trailways
  • A safe, peaceful home for future rescues

You don’t have to be wealthy to make a lasting difference. A small percentage of your estate (just 1%) can create a legacy that supports the compassionate, responsible care of great apes for generations to come.

If you’ve already included the Center in your plans, we hope you’ll let us know so we can thank you and recognize you in our Legacy Society. And if you’re just starting to think about your plans, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Planning ahead today ensures a better tomorrow - for you, your family, and the apes we all love.

Preparing for Hurricane Season

Allie

As we move into the most active part of hurricane season, the Center for Great Apes is taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our residents and staff. Preparedness is our strongest defense when storms threaten.

Our team closely monitors tropical weather systems and has comprehensive safety protocols in place to protect the apes, staff, and facilities. We’ve already stocked essential supplies, reviewed our emergency plans, and are ready to respond if needed.

To help us stay ready, we’ve created a Hurricane Season Wish List with items that directly support our storm preparedness efforts. While we sincerely hope we won’t need to use these supplies this year, having them on hand is one of the best ways to safeguard everyone at the sanctuary.

If you'd like to contribute, you can find the list here and send supplies directly to the sanctuary.

Volunteer Spotlight

Marie, a retired Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care Specialist, has volunteered at the Center for Great Apes for three seasons.

She’s hands-on with cleaning habitats, giving tours, mentoring new volunteers, and helping at events.

A lifelong animal lover and seasonal Florida resident, Marie’s favorite part of volunteering is connecting with the apes—especially Marco, Sandra, and clever Hannah.

When not at the Center, she enjoys gardening, sewing, reading, and fostering dogs.
