TROSA Graduate Danny Finds a Better Life Through Community

Danny turned to drugs at an early age. He spent decades in a cycle of addiction and incarceration. Through it all, he was always searching for connection, and was drawn to a community-based and peer-driven treatment model.

“When I learned about the importance of TROSA’s program’s structure–having a community–that was very attractive to me," shares Danny.

Danny takes advantage of many therapeutic classes and activities at TROSA. He works with counselors and mentors to address his emotions. He learns and practices new behaviors through his community assignment at TROSA Thrift Store. He takes time to cultivate his talents for music.

And he's learning to enjoy the world around him.

“I am finally learning how to live in my city,” he shares. “I went to a Durham Bulls game for the first time at TROSA. I’ve been to Duke games…I go to Cole Mill Trail…things that are special to Durham that I had never done before; despite living here for decades. And there’s so much more growth to take place…so much more that I can experience.”

Danny graduated from TROSA in 2021 and applied to stay longer in the program as a senior resident. He was recently accepted into TROSA’s Staff-in-Training program and is training to become a staff member.

"I have skills I want to further develop, like patience and better listening skills. Watching others grow as I’m growing…finding ways to interact with different people and different personalities…has been a joy. I will continue to help people while continuing on my own journey.”

Celebrating GED Graduates

TROSA GED recipients gathered before accepting their diplomas

TROSA celebrates a new group of residents who earned their GED! TROSA residents walked the stage as part of Durham Technical Community College's 2023 commencement ceremony, which was held at the acclaimed Durham Performing Arts Center.

Last year, 26% of TROSA participants entered the program without a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma/GED. Having this important education credential can open up doors to greater employment options.

As part of TROSA’s comprehensive support services, we help our eligible residents obtain their GED, providing access to tutoring, classes, and practice tests to prepare for exams in the required subject test areas (Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies).

Many thanks to our GED tutors, our Education department, and to fellow residents and staff for supporting our GED graduates every step of the way! Congratulations!
