New Resident Representative for UNDP Jamaica
Denise E Antonio is UNDP Resident Representative for Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands. She took up her new assignment in Kingston on 16 May.
Denise E. Antonio, an American citizen and native of the west African country, Liberia has been appointed UNDP Resident Representative for Jamaica. She presented her Credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith on June 5. In welcoming the new Resident Representative, Minister Johnson Smith said the cooperation between the government of Jamaica and UNDP has been deep and substantial, and expressed optimism that Ms. Antonio’s appointment would sustain and enhance this enduring partnership.

Jamaica's invaluable natural assets
The National Conservation Trust Fund of Jamaica (NCTFJ) is now ready to begin the work of financing Protected Areas in Jamaica. Creation of the Fund was a significant output of the National Protected Areas System (NPAS) project financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under its Sustainable Development portfolio, and implemented by the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) during 2010 to 2016.
Reducing the upfront cost of renewable energy in Jamaica - UNDP backs EPC model

The innovative Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) mechanism is to be piloted in Jamaica, thereby removing up front cost as a barrier. The EPC model offers the opportunity to develop a sustainable financing mechanism for renewable energy interventions in Jamaica. UNDP and Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) are implementing the Global Environment Facility (GEF 5) funded project.

Energy change key for water supply with seasonal water shortages
Government is getting ready to change the type of energy used to sanitize & pump potable water, raw effluent and water for irrigation - to cut down on fossil fuels, reduce Climate Change risks & reduce energy bills. A training workshop on Developing Standardized Baseline - Energy Efficiency in Water Supply and Power Sector was convened to this end with support from the UNDP-implemented Japan Caribbean Climate Change Partnership . EU-funded programme transfers IT equipment to help locate unreachable mineral deposits
Development Minerals - the type used to make everyday items like toothpaste, road materials and jewelry - abound in Jamaica, but most are unreachable. New IT equipment transferred to Government under the European Union-funded ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme can help locate these minerals to maximize job creation and income for small scale miners and artisans. The programme is implemented by UNDP and the Ministry of Transport and Mining.

What training in Tanzania did for my small biz
Devon Townsend tells his story
" Tanzania (training) taught us to mix our own clay using locally sourced raw materials ", says Devon Townsend. He was one of several artisans provided with grants and training from the European Union-financed ACP-EU Development Minerals Programme . The first phase of the four year programme, which ended in December, was implemented by the UNDP Jamaica in partnership with the Geology and Mines Division of the Ministry of Transport and Mining.
UNDP supports Uncut Conversations
series among Stakeholders & Youth
UNDP continued to support the Climate Change Division of the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation conduct its public awareness and consultation series branded 'Uncut Conversations on Climate Change'. The most recent uncut with stakeholders took place in May in Kingston at the Terra Nova Hotel, (photos top and bottom left). In June, the series headed east to Portland to the College of Agriculture, Science and Education (CASE) where young people from St. Mary, St. Thomas & Portland brought fresh and dynamic inputs into the ongoing Climate Change conversation.
