Meet Dr. Robert Knight, Honored Guest at Candlelight Gala

Robert Knight, M.D., Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California Berkeley, will be the Honored Guest at the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California's Candlelight Gala on Friday, November 21, 2014.

Dr. Knight is one of the foremost international leaders in human brain research. Dr. Knight has had 30 years of National Institute of Health funding and has worked tirelessly to understand neurologic functions. Based at UC Berkeley, Dr. Knight has mentored many physician scientists including UCSF Epilepsy Neurosurgeon Edward Chang, M.D., UCSF Neurologist Adam Gazzaley, M.D., Ph.D. and many other of his trainees hold faculty positions both in the US and internationally.

Bob was and continues to be my closest mentor. He is a brilliant scientist, but even more so, truly generous and compassionate. I have learned so much from him, says Dr. Edward Chang.

Along with other awards and honors, Dr. Knight has received the IBM Cognitive Computing Award, the German Humboldt Prize in Neurobiology, the Neurobionics Prize for contributions to Brain Machine Interface research and the Distinguished Career Contribution Award from the Cognitive Neuroscience Society. He has twice been the recipient of the Jacob Javits Award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for distinguished contribution to neurological research. His laboratory studies neurological patients with focal cortical damage and also records electrocorticographic signals from intracranial recordings from epilepsy patients in an effort to understand the role of prefrontal cortex in organized behavior. Currently, he is also working on mapping speech imagination in the human brain in an effort to develop a speech prosthesis for patients with disabling disorders of language.

In addition to his research Dr. Knight started a kid's science journal "Frontiers for Young Minds". The editorial board, consisting of young students, reviews articles by scientists who then revise the articles based on the kid input to make them 'kid-friendly'.

The Candlelight Gala will be held at the Julia Morgan Ballroom in San Francisco. The Gala is Co-Chaired by Edie E. Zusman, M.D. and Beth Ruggles, mother of Bronte, born with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
