Hanyi C., Volunteer of the Year Awardabove2

Hanyi was born in New York but grew up in the Bay Area.  She now lives in the South Bay with her husband and two sons.

Hanyi's first exposure to epilepsy occurred when her six-month old son was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms related to a previously undiagnosed intracranial hemorrhage. Before his seizures were controlled, Hanyi and her husband witnessed their son's loss of skills and his developmental regression. Thankfully, the seizures are now under control.  Like many parents, Hanyi began a relentless internet search for information about epilepsy. During this time, Hanyi's physician referred her to the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California (EFNC).  After Hanyi's family attended the 2013 Epilepsy Stroll and the 2013 Candlelight Gala, she began to volunteer for the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California to help other people who were also dealing with epilepsy

Hanyi enjoys all things related to computers and electronics, is a superb and creative chef, and has tremendous love and patience for the 'three' boys in her life! On most days, Hanyi can be found with her sons, whether it be in therapy sessions or guiding them through creative projects at home. Hanyi holds a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Southern California.

"The time and effort Hanyi puts in behind the scenes is above and beyond--we are so grateful for her dedication and service", says Katherine Keeney, President of EFNC. "After Hanyi's long days of helping her son with various therapies as well as taking care of her family, she still has the energy and commitment  to apply her knowledge and technological skills. We receive emails from her at 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m.--acting as our data specialist! Hanyi updates our website, sets up on-line event registrations, manages our social media, and incorporates her overall internet and computer software expertise," says Katherine. "Hanyi simplified our summer camp application as well as developing a new online version. With excellent judgment and never-failing grace, Hanyi does it all!," says Katherine. "We could not manage without her."

The Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California is deeply grateful for Hanyi's commitment and continued involvement. Shecontributes an irreplaceable element of EFNC's mission--educating people who don't have epilepsy as well as supporting those who do."
