Lafayette Urban Ministry is delighted to honor Margaret H. Prokopy and Matilda L. Berry as the Volunteers of the Month for August

Margaret, a Purdue student studying biomedical engineering, and Matilda, an Iowa student double majoring in English & Creative Writing and Elementary Education, have made a significant impact through their recent volunteer work with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program.

Margaret Prokopy

Margaret, a graduate of West Lafayette High School, has been a dedicated LUM volunteer this summer with the LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program, previously supporting programs like the Turkey Trot 5K and Tax Assistance Program

"LUM is a great resource for the community," Margaret shared. "The staff and students are awesome. I've seen how hard the staff work, and I hope I was able to help a little."

Margaret's enthusiasm for volunteering shines through, and she hopes to continue helping during the semester. "It’s been fun and rewarding, and I’m thankful for the opportunity."

Matilda Berry

Matilda, a graduate of West Lafayette High School, is a new but valued volunteer in LUM 5th Quarter Summer Learning Program. Despite this being her first year, she’s brought passion and creativity to the role.

"It’s a great way to help others while also having a little fun yourself." Matilda shared. "Everyone at LUM is so dedicated. The staff and volunteers really care about the kids."

Matilda finds working with the children both rewarding and fun, especially as she prepares for a career in education. LUM is grateful for her dedication and excited to see her continue to grow.

Behind the Scenes of the Emergency Shelter

A Unique & Powerful LUM Experience

A select group of LUM friends recently had the unique opportunity to experience life as a guest at the LUM Emergency Shelter. At the Behind the Scenes event, participants walked in the shoes of shelter guests, from signing up and checking in at the lockers to making their beds, eating meals, and completing chores. This immersive experience gave them a firsthand understanding of the LUM Emergency Shelter operations and the challenges faced by our unhoused neighbors.

Led by LUM staff, the event offered participants a deep dive into the LUM Emergency Shelter processes and the reasons behind each step. Video testimonials from current guests added a powerful, personal touch, highlighting the impact of LUM Homeless Services. The experience left everyone with a newfound appreciation for the resilience of the people LUM serves and the vital role LUM plays in their lives.

All of the BTS participants agreed that it was a profound experience—one they believe more people should have. If you would like to be included in the next Behind the Scenes event, email lum@LUMserve.org. This event is part of the yearlong celebration of the 40th Anniversary of LUM Homeless Services. If you're interested in investing in or donating to the LUM shelter, volunteering, or preparing and serving a meal, please check out the article below. Your support can make a difference.
