Dear Friends of Indigena,
On National Indigenous Peoples Day, we are delighted to share the remarkable journey of Maxine Noel, an esteemed artist of Santee-Oglala heritage, who hails from the Redtail Reservation in Manitoba. Known by her Sioux name, Ioyan Mani, which translates "to walk beyond."
Transitioning from a legal secretary in Edmonton and Toronto to a full-time artist in the late '70s, she has since garnered international acclaim for her work. Notably, Maxine was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2019 and received the Governor General of Canada Award in 2023, recognizing her significant impact on the arts.
Her leadership with the National Aboriginal Achievement Awards, along with her design contributions for the event's poster and trophy, further solidifies her influence in the art world. As a dedicated mentor to young Indigenous artists, Maxine passionately supports the next generation, inspiring them to pursue their artistic journeys.
From our gift shop, we are featuring a selection of Maxine's designs on various products from which she receives royalties. From her royalties, she generously donates to various indigenous causes.
We welcome you to meet Maxine at Gallery Indigena, Stratford on Saturday, June 21 or Sunday, June 22, from from 11- 3.
Sincerely,
Erla, Doug and Patti
