Oscar Rojas Lopez is an 18 year old San Francisco native and soon-to-be graduate of Mission High School. He began his journey as a peer mediator in his junior year. The more mediations he led, the more he fell in love with mediating. He feels very drawn to helping other students and create a more peaceful school environment and better community.
Oscar has led approximately 20 mediations for disputes involving family dynamics, bullying, gossiping, miscommunication, and harassment. In one instance, he mediated an issue that involved twelve participants that took six weeks and many sessions to resolve. Noticing how anxious students often feel before their mediation, Oscar takes great care to explain the process, preparing them to speak openly and confidently.
Oscar also mentors students in Mission High’s Newcomer Program, doing whatever he can to help monolingual students feel comfortable in their new school.
His Peer Resources teacher Ms. Aimee Riechel shares, “Oscar is one of the most kind, reliable, and humble young people I know. He is a joy and inspiration to all around him.”
