Idea of the Week:
Green Skills
|
|
Building a sustainable future requires "green" skills
Building a clean energy economy requires skills. Some are inherently green like conservation or pollution clean up, while others involve making "non-green" activities green (like sustainable fashion or investment).
LinkedIn's sustainability team, led by Green Jobs Forum Keynote Speaker Peggy Brannigan (Director, Global Environmental Sustainability at LinkedIn), identified 800 "core" green skills and more than 300 green-related skills across twelve categories such as pollution and waste prevention, renewable energy, and sustainability.
The fasted growing skills are in sustainable business and carbon neutral commitments, environmental services, climate, energy engineering, photovoltaics, and safety programs!

By Jessica Corbett
The new U.N. Environment Program (UNEP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) report highlights that humans are using 1.6 times the resources that the planet can sustainably provide and since the 1990s, 420 million hectares or over a billion acres of forest have been lost.
The U.N. agencies estimate that delivering on existing pledges to restore at least one billion degraded hectares of land will require an investment of at least $200 billion per year by 2030—and while that may seem steep, the report notes that every $1 invested in restoration creates up to 30 times that amount in economic benefits.

The draft legislation from Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland directs the Treasury Department and the Environmental Protection Agency to identify the companies that released the most greenhouse gases into the atmosphere from 2000 to 2019 and assess a fee based on the amounts they emitted.

Wildfires are raging in countries including Greece and Turkey, where thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes and on Tuesday a fire threatened to reach a coal-fired power plant. The fires have struck as Southern Europe experiences an intense heatwave.
