As the dog days of summer make their fiery descent, marking the typical shift in our Dallas weather from a soggy, storm-ridden spring to the infamous heat, I find myself reflecting on a significant milestone. June 1st marked my fifth anniversary as President/CEO of the Turtle Creek Association. Over these years, we've navigated an array of challenges together, drawing strength from our dedicated community.
Right from the start, we faced an unprecedented global pandemic that upended our usual ways of connecting and fundraising. Social distancing became the norm, and large gatherings were off the table. How were we to engage with you, our valued members, and sustain our fundraising efforts? Innovation led us to virtual home tours and the delivery of charcuterie boards and wine—creative solutions that not only kept us connected but also helped support our mission during uncertain times.

The winter of 2021, dubbed "Stormageddon," brought a brutal freeze that devastated vegetation across North Texas. Following that, we grappled with supply chain issues, and just recently, in 2023, we endured the hottest summer in four decades, which again took a toll on our cherished landscapes.
Through each of these trials, the Turtle Creek Association has not just survived but thrived, thanks to your unwavering support. Your commitment has enabled us not only to meet these challenges but also to expand our services, truly embodying our mission to preserve, protect, and enhance Turtle Creek and the corridor.
They say that when one door closes, another opens. Together, we have seen many doors close, yet new ones have consistently opened, teaching us about the incredible resilience and determination of our community. Your passion for Turtle Creek fuels my drive and determination to push forward, and for that, I am immensely grateful.
Thank you for standing by our side, for sharing your energy, and for your steadfast dedication to our cause. Here’s to continuing our journey together, filled with more achievements and sustained by the strength of our community.

Exciting New Art Installation
Coming to the Turtle Creek Corridor
Unveiling "Crow 1": A Symbol of Transformation
for Turtle Creek
We are excited to share a transformative addition coming to the Turtle Creek landscape, made possible by the generous donation from Brenda and Clay Cockerell. The Cockerells have graciously gifted "Crow 1", a striking bronze sculpture by the renowned international artist Arie Van Selm.
In many cultures, crows are symbols of transformation and change. This makes "Crow 1" an especially meaningful contribution to the Turtle Creek Corridor, aligning perfectly with the recent completion of TCA's updated master plan. Our renewed focus aims to transform Turtle Creek into a thriving ecosystem, making this sculpture a beacon of the positive changes we strive to achieve.
TCA is actively coordinating with the City of Dallas Parks and Recreation and the Office of Arts and Culture to ensure the thoughtful placement of the "Crow 1" sculpture. In partnership with Centurion American Group, the developers behind the upcoming Julian luxury tower, we aim to utilize "Crow 1" as a central feature in creating a welcoming gateway into the corridor. This initiative will significantly enhance the area's cultural and aesthetic value, making it a landmark destination within our community.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Brenda and Clay Cockerell for their remarkable generosity and Centurion American Group for their commitment to this project. Together, we are setting the stage for a transformed Turtle Creek, echoing the spirit of renewal that "Crow 1" represents.
Stay tuned for further updates as we progress with this exciting endeavor!

Ongoing Maintenance Efforts
We have established a monthly trimming schedule to maintain the rejuvenated landscape. Over the past week, our dedicated crews have diligently worked to clean the creek after several days of flooding rains. Next week, we will trim the banks and remove organic debris trapped under the Lemmon Ave Bridges and Stonebridge. Additionally, recent storms have caused several trees to fall, underscoring the urgent need for bank stabilization.
While our crews have cleared smaller fallen trees, the Department of Forestry has stepped in to remove larger ones. We are collaborating closely with Forestry to plan the replacement of many trees in the Dean Park area this fall.
Managing Invasive Species
Our team is also dedicated to an environmentally responsible approach when managing invasive species, specifically targeting Chinese Privet. This invasive plant competes with native vegetation and disrupts local ecosystems. You may have noticed a distinct difference in weed growth in some areas, where one section remained clear while another grew more rapidly. After experimenting with various eco-friendly chemicals, we are pleased to report that we have identified an effective and safe solution. We have begun applying this treatment to the affected area to ensure consistent and sustainable results.
Looking Ahead
Your involvement is crucial as we continue our efforts. Together, we can ensure that Turtle Creek and its surroundings thrive and serve as a beacon of community and environmental stewardship. We look forward to your continued participation and support as we continue these essential tasks.
