The Illinois House of Representatives 8th District Office is proud to welcome Imari Stewart as
Chief of Staff to Representative La Shawn K. Ford. Born and raised on Chicago's South Side,
Imari's commitment to public service is deeply personal. At nine years old, after losing her
God-sister to gun violence, Imari developed a lasting commitment to building safer, stronger
neighborhoods, places where families have the tools to build strong relationships and residents
have access to enriching opportunities that allow them to thrive.
Imari brings a background spanning economic research, public policy, and legislative affairs.
She began her career as a Research Assistant in Howard University's Department of
Economics, supporting Ph.D.-level research on eviction policy and intimate partner violence.
She later served as a Peterson Foundation Fiscal Policy Intern at the Brookings Institution's Tax Policy Center, where she researched state budget and tax policy. Most recently, she served as a Legislative Coordinator in the Office of the Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives, providing legislative support to members, tracking legislation, staffing committees, and supporting constituent engagement and office operations.
As Chief of Staff, Imari works on behalf of Representative Ford to coordinate district
engagement and office operations, including district events, external partnerships, legislative
affairs, constituent casework and agency coordination, stakeholder meetings, and other
