Dear Charting Careers Friends and Family,

School is back in session and with the layered crises present in our communities, it is more critical now than ever that we continue to support, encourage, and advocate for our students.

With that in mind, we are thrilled to welcome Leon Thomas, III (pictured right) as our part-time Director of College and Career Readiness! In this role, Leon will build relationships with our students and their families, lead our program design and implementation, and help ensure our students are able to chart their own course to fulfilling lives and careers.

Leon comes to us with 10 years of experience in higher education leadership, including several years leading programs for first-generation college students at Anne Arundel Community College. He is currently working on his doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management. We are so happy Leon has joined our staff and look forward to what we can accomplish together!

With gratitude,
Erin

Charting Careers Inquiring Interns Summer Program
is a Wrap!
The Charting Careers Inquiring Interns
program ended with practicing the technique of an informational interview. Thanks to media specialist, Janele Partman, creator of Landscape Dreamers and It's Too Early Podcast, for sharing her career experience and being the first practice interviewee!

The eight participating students set some immediate goals during the four sessions, and had a 1:1 resume session with a career professional. Going forward, Charting Careers will continue to support participants' career exploration and goal setting.
"This summer program helped me understand what I do well and what I didn’t during my past for my career... take my findings and fix them, which will allow me to eventually reach my end goal in my career as a NASA engineering manager." - 11th grade participant

"Inquiring Interns helped me finalize and perfect my resume and offered me great job search tips."

We Did Not Let This Pandemic Stop Us!

During the past few months, your donations have allowed us to:

  • Ensure all of our students have computers and desks for e-learning
  • Link families to food and other critical supplies
  • Conduct regular in-person and over the phone check-ins with students and families to assess needs, share resources, and maintain connection
  • Sign students up for camps and provided financial support for other engaging experiences such as a basketball tournament in Indianapolis
  • Deliver books so families could build their home libraries
  • Develop and implement our Inquiring Interns summer program with eight students
  • Collaborate with the Partnership for Children, Youth and Families, the City of Annapolis, and Anne Arundel County Public Schools to successfully advocate for $150,000 in funding to help address the digital divide in our community
  • Help facilitate weekly meetings with fellow nonprofit leaders to organize approaches to collaboration. The Collaboration has already spurred the Annapolis Backpack Collaborative; an effort (led by Laura Brino with Maryland Hall and Deonte Ward with Black Excel) to install outdoor learning spaces in public and subsidized housing communities in Annapolis; and plans for larger collective impact projects in the future.
Events and Efforts to Support in the Community
All are welcome to join a back-to-school celebration at Pip Moyer Rec Center on Saturday! Find Charting Careers, Linda Mundy, onsite if you are interested in volunteering.
Annapolis Backpack Collaborative (ABC)
Can you sponsor a student's school supplies for $15?
We need your help. ABC is a group of local non-profits and community organizations working to support middle school and high school students in the Annapolis area by providing backpacks, earbuds, and basic school supplies. Our goal is to have funds to help 2,500 students. All funds will go to Anne Arundel County Public Schools students.
