 | Paul Mejia |
Paul Mejia, former principal dancer of New York City Ballet, directs and choreographs ARTS San Antonio's presentation of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. By the time he reached the age of eighteen and had joined the New York City Ballet, Mejia danced most of the male roles in The Nutcracker culminating in the principal role of the Cavalier, and dancing the Grand Pas de Deux with the Sugar Plum Fairy. Mejia danced principal roles in many of George Balanchine's ballets.
In 1980, Mejia joined Chicago City Ballet as Co-Artistic Director with Maria Tallchief. During the next seven years, he created 15 new ballets, including his full-length version of Cinderella, which toured internationally to great acclaim. Mejia's ballet Eight by Adler, set to music by Richard Adler, was broadcast by PBS, winning an Emmy Award for its principal performer, Suzanne Farrell.
