Fire Department Talks Fire Safety With Youth

It's Fire Prevention Week, which means the Upper Gwynedd Fire Department will be making an extra effort to visit schools and daycares this week to discuss fire safety with young children.

The theme of Fire Prevention Week is "Cooking safety starts with YOU." The Fire Department's visits not only stress fire safety, they introduce young people to careers in public service.

The Fire Department accepts members as young as 14. The junior firefighter program sets individuals up for success as they learn skills and training valuable both in and out of the fire service.

Last year, the Fire Department started a partnership with the North Montco Technical Career Center to host interns from the Protective Services program. Two interns are currently spending time at the firehouse throughout the week, training and responding to emergencies during school hours as well as performing daily tasks to aid in keeping the firehouse running.

Most of the Fire Department's current line officers started their fire service careers as junior firefighters, like Captain Blaze Mullaly below.

Police Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

The Police Department is once again displaying pink ribbons and badges during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness.

Awareness of the facts and statistics surrounding breast cancer in the U.S. is key in empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health.

  • 64% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage (there is no sign that cancer has spread outside of the breast), for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%.

  • This year an estimated 43,700 women will die from breast cancer in the U.S.

  • Although rare, men get breast cancer too. In 2023, an estimated 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in the U.S., and approximately 530 will die.

Retail Theft Is A Serious Criminal Offense

The North Penn area, including Upper Gwynedd, has seen a significant rise in retail theft cases.

The Upper Gwynedd Police Department and the state take retail theft very seriously. There is a three-strike rule in Pennsylvania regarding retail theft offenses. The PA Crimes Code states that a third or subsequent retail theft will result in a 3rd degree felony charge, regardless of the amount of the stolen merchandise.
