Meet Us at The Maycroft
An exciting transition awaits Martha's Table at the end of the month. We will host our last day of programming at our historic 14th Street location on Thursday, February 28, 2019.

All of our high-quality programs (early childhood education, healthy food supports, and volunteer opportunities) will move with us to a newly renovated, thoughtfully designed space at the Maycroft building in Columbia Heights (15th Street and Columbia Road, NW). Doors open on Wednesday, March 6, 2019.

With our new headquarters at The Commons in Southeast D.C. and with the opening of The Maycroft in Northwest, we are better able to stand alongside neighbors on both sides of the river by offering high quality programs in two purposefully designed buildings.

NEW McKenna's Wagon
We are excited to unveil our new McKenna's Wagon van! Thanks to generous donors at our Annual Benefit in September 2018, we were able to purchase a brand new, spacious van to support us in serving hot meals every night of the year to D.C. neighbors who may be experiencing hunger and homelessness.

Several volunteer opportunities are available to assist with our weekday Martha's Table Market. Market guests are invited to shop at no-cost once per month for fresh fruits, vegetables, and pantry items.

Additionally, we offer events that are fun for the whole family:
  • Friday nights at The Hub - Join us every third Friday of the month for kid-friendly activities, special performances, and more!

  • Community Markets at The Commons - Join us on the last Friday of the month to for a large community event featuring our no-cost market, recipe samples, face-painting, community partner resources, and more. See below for upcoming dates.

The monthly Community Market at The Commons is held on the last Friday of each month from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM!
McKenna's Mid-Winter Goulash

Options:
  • *For a vegetarian option, omit beef. Add Seitan. Chop & add at final stage of cooking - just needs to be heated.
  • Substitute beets, turnips, parsnips for any of the vegetables.
  • Add chopped fresh herbs, parsley, thyme. 
Cook Time: 45 mins.
Serves: 6 people

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. Ground Beef *see note below for plant-based alternative 
  • 1- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 T. pre-minced garlic or 4-6 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 6-8 cups beef broth (depending on desired thickness)
  • 4-5 large potatoes, cubed
  • 3 large carrots, sliced
  • 2-3 stalks celery, chopped
  • 3 large tomatoes, diced OR 2 15 ounce cans diced tomatoes
  • 1 15 ounce can tomato sauce
  • 1-2 tablespoons Hungarian Style Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ¼ - ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt & pepper to taste
Steps
  1. Brown beef in skillet over medium heat. Drain excess fat, if desired.
  2. While beef is cooking, add olive oil to large stockpot over medium-high heat. Cook chopped onions & garlic, stirring often. Cook 5-8 minutes, until onions are tender and translucent.
  3. Add beef broth from can or constitute from bouillon cubes and water.
  4. Add vegetables (potatoes, carrots, celery), tomatoes, tomato sauce, herbs and spices. Stir to combine and bring mixture to a low boil.
  5. Drain beef and add to stockpot. Reduce stockpot heat to low. Simmer mixture 30 minutes or until all vegetables are tender.
