Learn by working: experiential pathways in graduate studies
|
Previously found almost exclusively in undergraduate programs, there is now growing support for developing experiential learning (i.e. work experience) at the graduate level. Students across disciplines are hungry for alternative ways to learn, but also to be remunerated for their skills. Institutions are responding by making space for EL within a busy curriculum. EL bridges the gap between theory and practice by giving students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they’ve gained through their program of study. For example, you may have learned about the best practices for marketing a product in your introduction to marketing course, but when your professor invites a small business into the classroom and you get to develop a strategy to bring their product to market, your textbook comes to life.
The applied work experience might be attached to different names. You might hear it called “co-op,” “internship,” “work-integrated learning” or others. These programs are different in how they are administered and count towards a degree, but they all lead to the same thing – learn by working. For simplicity, these hands-on learn-by-work experiences will be called an “internship.”

An Exploration mindest can help ease students' anxiety about their future
|
Through discovering their ikigai and planning for happenstance, young people can develop a sense of agency in their career journey
Stephanie Koonar
“What will you do when you graduate?”
This question can stop young people in their tracks. Many students feel lost and confused and are not sure of their next steps. They often feel pressure to choose one career for the rest of their life.
As career educators, we know that this is not the case. A career is a lifelong journey that includes many jobs, volunteer opportunities and roles. Most career journeys will require us to adapt and pivot as circumstances change and new opportunities present themselves.
One way to reduce stress and anxiety for young people is to introduce them to the exploration mindset. This approach asks youth to take a breath, to relax and to picture themselves on an adventure. This is a lifelong journey where they will learn about themselves and discover opportunities to use their talents to make a difference in the world.

HIPC - Recourses for Women!
|
With Women's History Month in March, there remains a strong need for ongoing awareness and action to address gender-based violence and advance gender equality.
Did you know?
-Racialized women and non-racialized women were equally likely to have experienced intimate partner violence.
-Among those who had ever been in an intimate partner relationship, 29% of women belonging to a racialized ethno-cultural group reported experiencing some kind of psychological, physical, or sexual violence committed by an intimate partner in their lifetime (since the age of 15).
-One-quarter (25%) of racialized women between the ages of 15 and 24 experienced IPV in the past 12 months.
