As we begin an exciting new year, you will notice a new format to our newsletter. In addition to the customary reporting on how teams finished, the NBA draft, key player commitments and any upcoming events or items, we will be introducing brand new content that we feel our fans will enjoy.

Keeping with tradition, we will continue to request student essays from each team participating in the 2022 Culligan City of Palms Classic. As always, the subject of the essay is you, your school and your community. Each essay will be published and featured in the official 2022 City of Palms program.

The most original and insightful essay will be selected and its author will receive the HOMETOWN HERO AWARD trophy in a special presentation during the 2022 tournament.

Gabe Parnas of Isidore Newman School was selected as our 2021 Hometown Hero. Read his essay below.

We look forward to sharing tournament, team, player updates and more with you throughout the year. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to me at johnnaylor@cityofpalmsclassic.com.

Until next time.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Gabe Parnes / Isidore Newman School Greenies / New Orleans, LA

This morning, my fancy new car unexpectedly broke down and on a whim, I hopped on the Saint Charles Streetcar as it rumbled by my house.

It amuses me that almost every visitor to our great city of New Orleans takes a streetcar ride, but the last time I rode one was as a kid on a school excursion.

I am writing this from the dark green trolley as it clickety-clacks down stately Saint Charles Avenue. The columned mansions, built by plantation owners on the backs of slaves, watch silently like ghosts from a forgotten era. I hop off at the corner of Jefferson and speed-walk the two blocks to school.

Thanks to the good ol’ streetcar, the longest continuously operating streetcar in the world, I make it to practice on time.

I warm up with my teammates under the watchful eye of our coach, Randy Livingston. To this day, Coach Liv is the greatest player ever to set foot on campus. He came from the projects of New Orleans and succeeded at all levels.

As these thoughts mash up in my brain, I am struck by three things:

First, don’t be afraid to get on board an old concept that has stood the test of time.

Second, not everything that looks great on the outside was built with integrity.

Third, no matter where you come from, you can achieve anything if you truly believe in your dreams, work hard and never give up.

This year, our team is on a mission to win our 10th state championship. With all of our talent and history, expectations are high. To reach our goal, expect to see some tried and tested “Old School” moves.

Also, expect us to act with integrity at all times, even when it is tough to do so. Finally, expect us to work hard and never give up because we believe in the power of our dreams and we are embracing those expectations with every fiber of our being.
Q&A SESSION
Joe North / The North Law Firm

Attorney Joe North is no stranger to Southwest Florida or The Culligan City of Palms Classic Basketball Tournament. Born and raised in the Dunbar community of Fort Myers, Florida, Mr. North is committed to giving back to his hometown in more ways than one.

For more than 30 years, Mr. North has handled injury and wrongful death cases throughout the entire state of Florida and across America. He also sponsors several youth athletic teams, including football teams, basketball teams, soccer teams, Faithworks empowerment organization and track and field teams—and on top of all that, Mr. North is also the longstanding Presenting Sponsor of the Culligan City of Palms Classic Basketball Tournament. Mr. North is also a proud member of the official City of Palms Classic Board of Directors.

In January 2021, Mr. North announced a new sponsorship and naming rights contract with his alma mater Dunbar High School, the first deal of its kind in the Lee County School District and part of a growing national trend as public education looks to fill a growing gap in funding. The North Law Firm Stadium is officially the new name of the Dunbar Tigers football, soccer and track and field stadium.

Recently, we sat down with Joe North to talk to him about his love of this community.

Did you dream of working in law from an early age? No, it was actually my sophomore year of college that I made the decision to become a lawyer.

Where did you study and where did you work before starting your own firm? I obtained my college degree from The Citadel Military College and my law degree from the Florida State University College of Law.

Are you a lifelong basketball fan and how did you become involved in the City of Palms tournament? Yes, my entire family loves basketball. I first became involved in the City of Palms Classic as a fan. I wanted to become more involved with the Classic, so my law firm became a Presenting Sponsor and because I wanted to be even more involved with the Classic, I became a Board Member.

Obviously with Dunbar High School's football field being named North Law Firm Stadium you must also be a football fan. How do you feel about being able to give back to your community through your love of sports? I believe sports can be a huge part of a student’s overall education. Because I was born and raised in Dunbar, I am honored (and humbled) to have the stadium renamed “North Law Firm Stadium.”

With February being Black History Month, does your firm commemorate the month in a certain way or by giving back to the community all year long? Yes, my law firm is a major sponsor of several events throughout Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, Black History Month, and the Dunbar Festival and Easter Weekend.
The North Law Firm, law practice focuses on helping clients after Car Accidents, Truck Accidents, Apartment Shootings and Violence, Nightclub Shootings and Violence, Slip and Fall Accidents, and Work-Related Accidents. The firm has offices in Fort Myers and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The law firm handles cases outside the state of Florida as well. For Attorney Joe North, no case is too big, or too small, or too far.
