Mickey Potts

Gerald Potts, known around Town as Mickey, is as much a Cornelius native as a person can be. You may know him from the eponymous Potts Barber Shop, a longstanding business that his father, Wilson, started in 1957, or from his lifelong reputation as a great neighbor.

The Potts family's roots run deep in Cornelius. Wilson first learned to cut hair from a neighbor when he was just 14 years old in 1926. He spent some time as an apprentice in a New York City barber shop, earned his barber license, and returned to Smithville in 1935. Around 1949, he began to work for Clarence Blakely, a man who owned his own haircutting business in an area formerly known as Brick Row.

In 1957, Blakely sold the shop to Wilson. Three years later, Brick Row was slated for demolition and Wilson moved Potts Barber Shop to its current location on Catawba Avenue, where it has been bustling ever since.

Each of Wilson's sons, James, Mickey, and Ron, worked in Potts Barber Shop at one point or another. Ultimately, the business was transferred to Mickey in 1996. He still cuts hair at the Shop if you visit on the right day, and on top of walking out the door with a great cut, you're guaranteed a big smile too.

Recently, Potts Barber Shop was designated a historic landmark by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmark Commission (HLC). In October, the Town's Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to recognize that designation. This came after a year of the Potts family working with the HLC to detail their family's chronology and all of the milestones that led to the opening and continuing operation of the Shop.

For Mickey, this designation is extremely important. Not only does it guarantee that the building which has housed so many memories, moments, and triumphs is preserved in years to come, it's also a way to honor Wilson, who dedicated his life to his family, his craft, and his community.

Mickey is grateful for all of the support he's received along the way and for all of the loyal patrons of Potts Barber Shop. As for us? We're grateful for Mickey. A good barber is an important part of anybody's life - a good neighbor is even better.

If you're interested in learning more about the history of the Potts family and of Potts Barber Shop, you can read the HLC Designation Report here.
