Meet our Interns:
Kate Reed & Lauren Schultz
Kate Reed

Where are you from and what's your background?
I have lived in York, Pennsylvania, my entire life.  I was homeschooled 4th through 12th grade.  After I finished high school I was a live-in nanny for four years and then worked for Servants (sister mission organization) as their short-term missions trip coordinator up until moving here.

How long have you served/will you be serving with NLAI?
Before starting my internship I had been to NLCH five times on various short-term trips with Servants. It was in January of 2017 that I really felt a strong calling to come back for a longer period of time. I completed my three months of language school the beginning of June and will be serving at NLCH until February 2019.

What has been your favorite/most memorable part of serving at NLCH?
A girl's 15th birthday party is so special in Guatemala, and I've had the opportunity to do two girls' hair for their celebration. I loved being able to be a part of their special day in that way.

Tell us about a special interaction with or story of transformation of one of the NLCH kids:
I've really enjoyed spending some quality time just getting to know everyone. When you come on a short-term team, your time is pretty scheduled and you don't always have the opportunity just to get to know the kids one-on-one. Last week I had an awesome time baking with Emily and enjoyed getting to know her better. And sometimes I have a few of the older boys over for coffee after they get home from school and get to hear about their day.

How can we pray for you?
  • Language! That I would continue to learn and retain to be able to communicate better.
  • That God would continue to reveal his will to me. And that it would be clear where or what He would like me to do after my internship
  • That God would continue to open the doors for building great relationships with the kids.
Lauren Schultz

How long have you served with NLAI?
I served as a summer intern, which is a 9-10 week internship that includes 2 weeks of language school. I arrived the last week of May and just came home on July 30.

What has been your favorite/most memorable part of serving at NLCH?
My favorite part of serving at NLCH has been homework time with the kids in Prepa (elementary school). We read together, sometimes with them on my lap and it's just such a sweet, special time. I also enjoy the time I can spend at the school.

Tell us about a special interaction with or story of transformation of one of the NLCH kids:
During homework time with the kids, Sucely always hated doing her reading time.  One day I think it took almost an hour to complete her required 12 minutes of reading because she refused and avoided it so much! But over time and some new strategies, she is getting quality practice each day and growing in her skills.  I notice little bits of growth in how willing she is to try sounding out difficult words.  And I love that quality time sitting with her and encouraging her to keep trying, even when it's difficult.

How can we pray for you?
I would love prayer as I transition into a new school year back home in the USA.  I hope to take what I learned here, especially my improved Spanish skills, to enrich my classroom and connect with all of my students' families, including those who do not speak English.
