Q: What's your favorite thing about volunteering at the bookstore?
I love meeting people, and being the information person, informing them about books and suggesting books to them. I like the interaction of handing out pamphlets and helping them look for something. It's lovely talking to people, especially those who visit the library.
Q: What are your favorite books that the bookstore sells and why?
Mystery books. I like figuring out things and solving them. I like to solve the mystery, and I love the chase. Daniel Silva is one author I love and recommend to anyone who also likes mysteries.
Q: What is something people might not know about you?
I love working with children. In fact, I also volunteer in a group called Literacy Coalition of Palm Beach County (
https://www.literacypbc.org
) which is an organization where volunteers are assigned to help children who aren't at the reading level where they're supposed to be. I have three children assigned to me and, I sometimes help more children on my own. I read to them, explain vocabulary, and try to get them to comprehend the reading.
I was an artist, too, a talent I believe my grandson (12 years old) inherited.
Q: What do you think is an underused feature of the library?
Utilization of the information available at the library. Our bookstore also has a lot of useful books people don't know about. I once called the FAU art department and told them about the abundance of art books we had for sale that were $1 -$5 and the next day they were all gone! They clearly needed and wanted them, but just didn't know we had them. I have also called schools to advise we have an abundance of donated books for kids, and those books are bought up the next day also. I try to tell teachers as much as I can about our books for sale, since more often than not we have what they need. We have inexpensive quality books for everyone.
Q: What is your favorite quote you live by?
"Don't sweat the small stuff." I think everyone should follow it, they'll live much happier and carefree.
Q: What is something you'd like for others to know?
I try and instill confidence in my kids, and believe everyone should be more confident in life. You can go far with confidence.
