AFP ICON Recap
by Chamberlain Scholar, Sam Franz
|
|
As the recipient of the Chamberlain Scholarship, I was honored to be chosen by my AFP Santa Barbara/Ventura Chapter to attend my first AFP International Conference in Las Vegas. From registration to the closing session, my time at the conference was full of learning, networking, personal growth, and new ideas. I expected all of these things to happen, having been to other professional conferences before, but AFP ICON was different. Perhaps because professional fundraisers are a different sort of people (in the best way!). At other conferences I have attended, there can be cliques, speakers not staying after to chat with listeners, and little networking with the “newbies”; AFP ICON could not have been more different. I met people from all over the world, from executive directors to grant writers each willing to connect, share stories, and learn from one another. And that was just connections made during the downtime and general sessions. One thing I appreciated about AFP ICON was the dedicated sessions, affinity groups, and connection time that the conference hosted where you could connect with your fellow fundraisers. In particular, the Chamberlain Scholars Meeting, the Emerging Leader Affinity Groups, or the other post conference session time all created opportunities to build connections and share ideas from the educational sessions. Simply put, the networking opportunities and connections I made with my fellow attendees were invaluable.
It wasn’t just the people I met that made the conference one of a lifetime but also the ideas that were shared. Each session offered a new perspective, grew my understanding of philanthropy, and deepened my knowledge of the field. It would be impossible to highlight a favorite session since so many pop to the forefront of my mind when I think back on them. But I can share two key takeaways that I will take back to the office and share with my colleagues. The first, is that AFP through our local chapter and AFP Global have amazing resources for career growth and learning. Many sessions mentioned different and invaluable AFP resources that I had not known existed. The second, is a new appreciation and vigor to do “the little things” in my daily work. The stories shared during each educational session highlighted what we do as fundraisers on a daily basis but the sessions reminded us of the why. Centering ourselves back on the “why” of the things we do can give us new purpose and inspiration when we tackle the little things and the big things at work.
Thank you for this amazing opportunity to attend my first AFP ICON. I look forward to getting more involved with my AFP local chapter and the AFP Global community!
With gratitude,
Sam
