Celebrating Social Work Month

Springboard: A Pioneer in the Field of Social Work

and Innovator in Behavioral Healthcare Today

Baltimore has been recognized as the cradle of professional social work. Many of the original organizations in the field of social work are connected to Springboard's founding entities including the Association to Improve the Condition of the Poor and the Charity Organization Society, Springboard's predecessors.

In 1849, Springboard's founding organization -- The Association to Improve the Condition of the Poor, (AICP) was formed to help families transition from an agricultural to an industrial society. The AICP grew and merged with the Charity Organization Society (COS), which was formed in 1881 by Daniel Coit Gilman, the first President of Johns Hopkins University.

Springboard has continued to grow and evolve in response to the emerging needs of the times. Today, Springboard offers a mix of case management, counseling, and supportive services with offices in Baltimore City, Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties. Springboard is also the on-site mental health provider at Child Advocacy Centers (CAC) in Carroll, Harford, and Howard counties. It is also also the designated domestic violence provider for Carroll County.

"Springboard has domestic violence case managers, a domestic violence shelter therapists, and I can call on any one of them when we have a family in crisis. Springboard is very, very supportive in making sure we do what we can for the families we are serving."

"Poor mental health can make it difficult to find and maintain housing, and, homelessness can make mental health challenges worse," said Joy McQuay (center), a member of Springboard's Rapid Rehousing Team in Baltimore pictured with her colleagues Alisa Nelson (L) and Sherrea Fleet (R).
