Nature study identifies 21 existing drugs that could treat COVID-19
Led by Sumit Chanda, Ph.D., a global team of scientists has analyzed the most comprehensive collection of known drugs for their ability to block replication of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The researchers identified 21 drugs that would likely be safe and effective in patients. Multiple compounds were found to work synergistically with remdesivir, a current standard-of-care treatment for COVID-19. The study was published in
Nature.

A helping hand for cancer immunotherapy
Research from Ze'ev Ronai, Ph.D., suggests that PRMT5 inhibitors may turn “cold” tumors “hot,” making them responsive to immunotherapy. Since PRMT5 inhibitors are currently in clinical trials for some types of cancer, the discovery suggests that they should now be evaluated in tumors that are not responsive to immunotherapy. The study was published in
Science Translational Medicine.

New drug target for dry AMD identified
Francesca Marassi, Ph.D., has shown that the blood protein vitronectin is a promising drug target for dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of vision loss in Americans 60 years of age and older. The discovery may lead to a therapy for the condition, which affects nearly 10 million people. The study was published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
