|
An active board member for the Harbor Springs Chamber for six years, Brandon Leestma has been elected chairman of the board starting in January. He says “The transformation in the last six years has been nothing short of phenomenal. I have big shoes to fill, but I am looking forward to stepping in and continuing the positive impact the Chamber has had over the recent years.”
Leestma earned an Associates Degree from North Central Michigan College and started working at First Community Bank in 2013 as a teller. “I had no prior banking experience but was willing to learn as much as I could,” he recalls. He was promoted to Customer Service Rep, then Loan Operations Manager, and when Ann Payne announced her retirement in 2017, was named Vice President of Mortgage Lending

Meet the chamber's new board members
Three newly elected board members will be introduced to the membership and officially installed at the Chamber's Annual Meeting at 8 a.m. Thursday, January 25th, at Harbor Springs City Hall. Here's a little background on these local leaders:
DAVE CROWLEY and his wife Sally have been managing Pet Pantry for the last two and a half years, and they will become owners on the first of the year. The store is located in Fairview Plaza at 1030 State Street. “Dogs and cats are our passion and being able to be a part of the community through supporting children and animal programs is really important to us,” Dave said. “The store makes this happen.”
Dave was a supply chain consultant for 25 years with clients that included Dow Chemical, Steelcase, General Mills and NASA. Then he made a slight career change, spending 10 years as a boat captain, most notably running the Pier restaurant Pointer boat in Harbor Springs. His hobbies include anything weather related - he is a certified NOAA Weather Watcher - and all things marine, including tinkering with our 1956 Lyman runabout.
He has volunteered at many community events including Taste of Harbor, the Dachshund Races and many beer festivals at Boyne Highlands. “I love Harbor Springs and wanted to serve on the board in order to continue to make this such a vibrant community,” Dave said.
BRANDI MESNER is the general manager of the Colonial Inn, the only hotel in the City of Harbor Springs, located at 210 Artesian Avenue. She is originally from New York, but her husband Jason is from Harbor Springs. He is retired from the Army, and after many years of service and relocation, they have settled permanently in Harbor Springs. They have three grown children, with one in his senior year at Harbor Light School. She enjoys cooking, foraging, gardening, and travel, and she is involved locally with the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society, the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau and the West Michigan Tourist Association.
Brandi has spent the last 22 years in the spa and hospitality industry, and she enjoys “the ever-changing challenges and potential that it offers. I've been a part of the community for 23 years, and have seen immense growth take place. I want to be a contributing force in how this beautiful community develops.” “I'm eager to bring the Colonial Inn to local residents and visitors' minds, as a viable venue for events, as well. We want to bring hospitality at its finest.”
NOLEN PULLIAM is the Hardgoods Manager for The Outfitter at 153 E. Main Street. He is pursuing a business management degree at North Central Michigan College. Nolen lives in Harbor Springs with his partner and two children. Before settling down here,he lived and enjoyed life in Colorado. Asked about his hobbies and interests, he said that would be “almost any activity that gets me outside and spending time with my family.”
He said he is “thrilled to serve the community and the Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce” as a way to “contribute to the success of the business community and visitor experience. I want to contribute to the growth and success of local businesses and residents, engage in meaningful collaborations, and positively impact the community.”

Conservancy’s largest land investment to date: 56 acres of Lake Michigan shoreline
The Little Traverse Conservancy has made a purchase that protects the largest undeveloped, unprotected Lake Michigan shoreline from Charlevoix to the Mighty Mac. This is a landmark moment for our region and for Little Traverse Conservancy (LTC). This past Friday, December 8, the Conservancy purchased 56 acres with a quarter mile of shoreline on Little Traverse Bay in the small Charlevoix County community of Bay Shore. This is the land trust’s biggest financial investment in land to date, and one that was only made possible because of the great vision and dedication of LTC members.
Jennifer Adderley, LTC member and a known lover of the Lake, was invited to admire the unparalleled beauty of the land before it would likely be sold to another buyer. Jennifer spent months thinking about the rocky shoreline and all the sunsets that could be enjoyed there. Jennifer believed in the project and called the Conservancy to pledge the first major gift from the Terence and Jennifer Adderley Foundation, hoping that the rest would come.
Thankfully, the Charles M. and Joan R. Taylor Foundation, Inc. shared Jennifer’s belief that this land deserved to be protected. Joining together with the anonymous lead donor, a vision was made to create Enji-minozhiiyaamigak, the Anishinaabemowin word for “The Place of Peacefulness.” Recognizing that US-31 is a well-traveled route for many who visit northern Michigan, the anonymous lead donor wanted this to be a place for all. They also wanted to honor the history of the land and the Bay Shore Band of Odawa who had lived there. All signs will be in Anishinaabemowin first and English following.
A very important addition to protecting this land is creating LTC’s first owned and cared-for universally accessible (UA) trail. This added another layer of challenge and inspiration to the Conservancy’s plan. The Place of Peacefulness could not be open to all without a trail that can be used by all – including walkers, strollers, and wheelchairs. Brynne and Bob Coletti of Harbor Springs and Naples, FL believed in this vision and made the first-ever quadruple match challenge in LTC’s history to ensure that the accessibility component was included. Thanks to the added support of the Frey Foundation, Soter Kay Foundation, Teddy and Molly Schiff, Gordon and Sharon Hassing, and 142 donors, the land has now been purchased and LTC can begin work on the UA trail with the goal of a grand opening celebration later next year.

CTAC School of Ballet presents The Nutcracker
Crooked Tree Arts Center School of Ballet’s 14th annual production of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker will be performed on stage at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts. Performances are Saturday, December 16 at 3 pm and 7 pm and Sunday, December 17 at 3 pm.
This year’s production of The Nutcracker has been reimagined with all new choreography and costumes. Now set in the 1920s, the opening Party Scene introduces themes that appear later in Clara’s adventures. Especially notable are the choreographic contributions of Peter Sparling, University of Michigan dance professor emeritus. Sparling has brought a fresh, new take to the Waltz of the Flowers, outlining a story in which a Bumble Bee seeks to pollinate a garden of beautiful, tulle flowers. Queen Flora, performed by faculty member, Marie Millard, teaches her garden of flowers to blossom.
Ticket pricing for the performances is $35 Adult, $10 Student, $75 Box seats, and a $100 ticket option for Friends of the School of Ballet to support the program even further. All tickets are selected and reserved; no general admission seats are available. The Great Lakes Center for the Arts is handling ticket sales for The Nutcracker. Contact their offices by calling 231-439-2100 or by visiting their website: www.greatlakescfa.org.

North Central Michigan College’s Class of 2023 nurses recite the International Pledge for Nurses during the college’s pinning ceremony on May 5, 2023. All 25 graduates passed the NCLEX-RN licensure exam on their first attempt, earning a 100% first-time pass rate.
NCMC nursing grads achieve 100% pass rate
North Central Michigan College’s Class of 2023 nurses achieved a 100% first-time pass rate on the National Council Licensing Examination for RNs (NCLEX-RN), the test that qualifies graduates to practice as registered nurses.
NCMC Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences Brent LaFaive said the accomplishment further establishes North Central as a top-tier nursing program in the state. “Any patient would be fortunate to have a North Central graduate for a nurse,” LaFaive said. “A perfect pass rate on the NCLEX-RN is not only a testament to our students’ hard work and ability, but also to the quality and dedication of our many talented full-time, adjunct, and clinical nursing instructors.”
This is the second time in four years that a North Central nursing class has achieved a 100% first-time pass rate. The first was in 2020, when nursing graduates overcame challenges related to COVID-19 to notch a perfect pass rate.
Both nursing classes were assisted by a generous gift from the Borra Family Foundation, which helped launch North Central’s NCLEX Success Program. The program covers the cost of a live NCLEX training session and provides financial support for students to take the exam and secure their nursing licenses if they follow a prescribed path to complete the NCLEX shortly after graduation.
